The ChEMaRTS group is based at KU Leuven Group T and counts three professors and a number of highly motivated PhD students, all active under the unit of Sustainable Materials Processing and Recycling (SeMPeR) of the Department of Materials Engineering (MTM) and/or under the Process Engineering for Sustainable Systems (ProcESS) of the Department of Chemical Engineering (CIT). The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with Prof. Giuseppe Granata, whose research focuses on hydrometallurgy and mechanochemical processing of primary mineral resources and secondary raw materials such as waste, residues and end-of-life streams.

Responsibilities

The development of sustainable methods to obtain critical raw materials from primary mineral resources and/or from residues and end-of-life streams is key to the energy transition. We are thus searching for a researcher to strengthen our team towards the direction of hydrometallurgy, mechanochemistry and electrochemistry. The primary research focus of the postdoctoral researcher will be mechanochemically-assisted recycling of lithium-ion batteries. Other responsibilities will be:
  • To work on the development of hydrometallurgical processes for primary and secondary raw materials and on the use of mechanochemistry and/or electrochemistry as a process intensification tool.
  • To contribute to the (co-)supervision of PhD students and Master students in the group.
  • To publish the outcomes of research in top academic journals and conferences.

Profile

As the ideal candidate:
  • You have obtained a PhD degree in chemical engineering, applied chemistry or relevant discipline with a solid background in hydrometallurgy.
  • You have a strong background in electrochemistry as a tool to study leaching reactions.
  • You have experience and/or knowledge of mechanochemistry as an intensification tool in hydrometallurgy
  • You have experience with reaction kinetics and reaction modeling
  • You have obtained clear scientific contributions during your PhD, e.g. shown through publications in relevant top academic journals.
  • You are able to communicate fluently at a high professionally level in English, both orally and in writing.
  • You are willing to contribute to grant proposals in the field of your expertise.

Offer

We offer:
  • an exciting job in an inspiring research environment, within an international team of enthusiastic colleagues at the most innovative university in Europe.
  • the possibility to participate at international conferences and be involved in multiple projects.
We offer a full-time postdoc position at KU Leuven for a maximum time of three years after an evaluation at the end of the first year. The salary is based on the KU Leuven standards linked to your experience.
