Title: Potentially new applications for converting thermal energy into mechanical energy
Summary: The study of thermal convection in a vertical axis cylindrical vessel shows that for some values of the control parameters, a multi-cellular regime having a precession motion around the axis of the container. In this particular configuration, the conversion of thermal energy into kinetic energy confers a kinetic moment to the liquid contained in the container . The study we propose consists of exploiting this phenomenon towards two potentially relevant applications: i) a mixer without a mobile part; ii) a thermal mini-engine (with liquid-vapour phase change to extract more mechanical energy to the system).

Job description: The candidate will conduct numerical simulations with the research code developed in the laboratory to significantly contribute to the following actions:
1) show the existence of an overall rotating movement of convective structures;
2) define the parameters for the control of the phenomenon and the ranges of variability of these parameters that would allow to control it;
3) quantify the fraction of kinetic energy that can be extracted from the system and define the most appropriate way to do so;
4) define and quantify the equivalent of associated thermodynamic performance.
Essential skills: fluid mechanics (viscous fluid flows), heat transfer, natural convection, thermal-convective instabilities, numerical simulations, etc.
Desired skills: necessary skills described above, relational towards teamwork and exchanges, involvement in the project to achieve the pre-sizing of experimental prototypes, ease in scientific communication (written and oral).
