DIFFER is the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research, one of the nine research institutes of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The institute focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to energy research, combining physics, chemistry, engineering and materials science. DIFFER's research takes place in two main themes: Solar Fuels for the conversion and storage of renewable energy and Fusion Energy as a clean and unlimited source of energy. DIFFER develops and supports a national network on fundamental energy research and collaborates closely with the academic community and industrial partners.
In the framework of NWO Materials for Sustainability programme (Mat4Sus), the CCER group at DIFFER, has a vacancy for a software engineer (halt time, 0.5 fte) to work on the COLORFLOW project. COLORFLOW is a bilateral public-private partnership project between DIFFER and GES (Green Energy Storage from Italy) that aims to combine modern computational and experimental approaches for the design of efficient electroactive compounds for redox flow batteries.
The electricity supplied by renewable energy sources tends to be unpredictable. To attune supply with demand, affordable batteries that efficiently store and release electrical energy are needed. COLORFLOW project aims to tweak thousands of both known and new compounds found that could potentially be used in redox flow batteries to store electrical energy generated by renewables. At DIFFER, we perform robust and rapid calculations to predict the properties of a large set of compounds and to virtually down select the best candidates for experimental studies. Next, the most interesting compounds will be tested at the laboratories of GES.
We work on to develop an advanced and reusable computing infrastructure and data platform for materials research. Efficient computing requires glue codes to enable the automation in generating and populating of virtual libraries of materials, to dispatch different compute tasks to supercomputers, and to collect useful data from calculations. The accumulated data from calculations then can be used for deep learning approaches aimed at property prediction.

We seek enthusiastic candidates who are willing to work in an international and interdisciplinary team of physicists and chemists. The applicant should have a recent university (i.e. HBO, bachelors or masters degree) in computer science, data science or a closely related field. Excellent programming skills (e.g. Python, bash) are essential. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in database platform development. Good verbal and written communication skills in English, and the ability to work well, both individually and as the member of a team, are required.
Our institute offers a first class and international research environment with various interdisciplinary but related research topics and projects. You will be employed by the NWO institute Foundation half time (0.5 fte) for a fixed period of one year, with the intention to extend the contract after this period we another definite time of one year. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 1.928 euro gross per month (based on 19 hours a week), depending on your level of experience. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 percent and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33 percent.
