DIFFER is the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research, one of the nine research institutes of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The institute focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to energy research, combining physics, chemistry, engineering and materials science. DIFFER's research takes place in two main themes: Solar Fuels for the conversion and storage of renewable energy and Fusion Energy as a clean and unlimited source of energy. DIFFER develops and supports a national network on fundamental energy research and collaborates closely with the academic community and industrial partners.
At DIFFER we perform fundamental research on renewable energy. Are you interested in supporting our research team and extend the technical support capabilities within our Solar Fuels Facilities and Instrumentation group? We are seeking a Laboratory Technician who will manage several chemical laboratories and setups and who can assist the scientific staff.
Responsibilities and tasks:
You will be the daily contact person for scientific staff and users of the chemistry labs within DIFFER. As such, your primary responsibilities will be (i) providing hands-on support on a daily basis in the laboratories, (ii) performing daily supervision and maintenance of the chemistry labs including the disposal of chemical waste, (iii) ordering and re-stocking of consumables. Additionally, you will be the contact person for users and suppliers of some of our shared equipment: for example, you may perform frequent maintenance or calibrations, stay in contact with the suppliers, select and purchase new equipment and provide instructions to the users. All these task will be carried out in close contact with DIFFER scientists to support their experiments. Depending on the workload, you may also be involved in specific tasks of a research project. Finally, as laboratory technician you have an important role regarding the chemical safety in supporting the DIFFER safety officers as well as in the supervision of the safe operation of chemical setups. The latter may also involve your continuous input on setting up, improving or simplifying procedures for our chemistry environments.
We seek enthusiastic candidates that are willing to work in an international and interdisciplinary team of chemists and physicists. The applicant should hold a relevant HBO degree in the field of chemistry or chemical engineering (e.g. HLO), although different relevant qualifications will be considered. Prior experience in handling and maintaining frequently used devices in chemistry labs such as gloveboxes, gas chromatographs, high temperature furnaces, mass spectrometers, etc. is considered a plus. Affinity with vacuum and/or handling of process gases is highly welcome. Some background in the treatment or synthesis of ceramic materials or the processing/handling of thin films would strongly support our current research activities. Very good verbal and written communication skills in English are mandatory.
Our institute offers a first class and international research environment with various interdisciplinary but related research topics and projects. You will be employed by the NWO institute Foundation for a fixed period of two years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 3,492 euro gross per month, depending on your level of experience. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 percent and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33 percent.
