Spara jobbet

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

The Laboratory of Joining Technologies and Corrosion at Empa in Dübendorf drives innovations in joining technologies and corrosion management to enable evolution towards increasingly efficient, reliable and sustainable material technologies.

For our 3-years collaboration project with Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) on the Development of nanostructured Cu-Mo composites with tailored properties for thermal management, we are looking for a PhD Candidate who will perform interdisciplinary research spending 18 months at Empa (Switzerland) and 18 months at Warsaw University of Technology (Poland).

PhD Position in Nanocomposites for thermal management

Research subject
The aim of the PhD project is to elaborate methodologies for thermal conductivity measurements of submicron- and nano-scaled metallic composites, and to apply these methodologies in the development of new-generation materials for thermal management, for example in power electronics. State-of-the-art methods for the determination of thermal conductivity will be compared, and their suitability for the determination of thermal conductivity of newly-developed fine-structured Cu-Mo composites will be evaluated. The methods involve the Laser Flash Analysis technique (LFA), Hot Disk Transient Plane Source (TPS) and opto-thermal methods. Based on the evaluation results, appropriate measurement and data analysis procedures will be elaborated and implemented to support the development of Cu-Mo composites for thermal management. Special attention will be paid to scale- and interface effects on the thermal conductivity in these composite materials. Interdisciplinary and international collaboration is expected.

Your profile

  • Master degree in Physics, Materials for Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Material Science, or Nanoscience/Nanotechnology
  • Interest in the development of measurement methods, scientific interest, and good experimental skills
  • Interest and ability to work in an international, interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent knowledge of English (oral and written) is mandatory, preferably knowledge of German; good communication skills

Our offer

  • An international PhD position with a mobility scheme (18 months employment in Switzerland and 18 months in Poland, on local financial conditions)
  • A highly interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment
  • Attractive employment conditions of the ETH Domain during the stay at Empa and an excellent academic environment during the stay at WUT
  • An international network and contacts to academic and industrial partners
  • Opportunity to develop and make your own contribution in a socially and economically highly regarded field

We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.

We look forward to receiving your complete online application including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas and contact details of two reference persons. Please submit these exclusively via our job portal. Applications by e-mail and by post will not be considered.
