Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

Our Center for X-ray Analytics is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge X-ray analytical and imaging methods to gain insight into the structure of various materials. We focus on a wide range of applications, including materials science, life sciences, and biomedical translational research. A postdoc/scientist position is currently available within our center. The Translational Musculoskeletal Biodynamics initiative aims to uncover key biomechanical markers and profiles specific to degenerative musculoskeletal diseases. This ambitious project combines in vivo and ex-vivo multimodality imaging, biomechanics, clinical studies, materials science and big data management. We are currently focusing on orthopedic biomechanical and structural aspects of spinal disorders, which are one of the leading musculoskeletal diseases in the elderly.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Musculoskeletal Structural Imaging

Your tasks
As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will play a key role in enhancing the accuracy of clinical data using advanced 3D bio-histology methods. You will focus in gaining new insights into the degenerative processes of the spine, as well as investigating the role of soft tissues in the etiology and progression of spinal stenosis. A critical aspect of this project is the use of advanced X-ray analysis tools, including micro and nano X-ray tomography, as well as the application of image processing and analysis techniques and the correlation of 3D histomorphological findings with biomechanical behavior. You will also collaborate in developing expertise in integrating dynamic biplane radiographic imaging (DBRI) with conventional medical imaging techniques, emphasizing musculoskeletal biodynamics, and in the transition from small sample studies to a large dataset approach.

Your profile

  • PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Biomechanics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in medical and/or preclinical imaging, preferably in musculoskeletal imaging.
  • Proficiency in 3D imaging techniques (mainly X-ray CT and micro-CT) and data analysis.
  • Previous experience in microscopy, histology, or orthopedic biology is strongly preferred
  • Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with clinical and research teams.

Our offer

  • Opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project with significant potential for clinical impact.
  • Access to state-of-the-art imaging facilities and collaboration with leading experts in the field.
  • Support for professional development and research dissemination.
  • The work will be carried out at Empa Dübendorf, near Zurich.
  • The contract will be initially limited to 2 years with a possibility of extension.
  • The postion is immediately available or upon mutual agreement.

We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.

We look forward to receiving your complete online application including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas and contact details of two reference persons. Please submit these exclusively via our job portal. Applications by e-mail and by post will not be considered.
