The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.
Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.
Supported by 21 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.
Serial Synchrotron Crystallography is now a standard tool for structural biology at ESRF. It has applications at both room temperature and cryogenic temperatures with and without time resolution. Although significant progress has been made in experimental design, sample delivery, data collection strategies and data analysis, challenges remain. One such challenge is the de-segregation of mixed populations of structural data. The origin of this diversity could be due to a number of phenomena, including, but not limited to, radiation damage, (de)hydration and incomplete penetration of ligands or light. This postdoctoral position will be focused on applying previously developed machine learning techniques to single image serial experiments. Application and refinement of these approaches will be applied to both in house data as well as data collected by external research groups at the ESRF. As for all post-doctoral researchers in the Structural Biology Group, you will participate in in-house research programmes, will contribute to the operation of the beamline and will provide support to external users as local contact. You will also have the opportunity to develop your own research programme.
