Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world´s leading medical universities. Its mission is to contribute to the improvement of human health through research and education. Karolinska Institutet accounts for over 40 per cent of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden and offers the country´s broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences. Since 1901 the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has selected the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.

Division

We are seeking an outstanding candidate for a post-doctoral fellowship dedicated to explore the synergisms between the epigenome and the 3-dimensional nuclear architecture to effectuate oncogene expression from new perspectives. The successful applicants are expected to drive a postdoctoral project in the lab of Anita Göndör at the department of Oncology and Pathology, as well as to participate in collaborative efforts with both national and international collaborative labs with a focus on breast and colon cancer. Our lab is well-equipped including a Mi-seq machine and a 5-color confocal microscope, and located within the Theme Cancer section of BioClinicum at Karolinska Institutet.

For further information about our work, please consult a selection of reports from our labs:

Nature. 2009 461, 212-7(2009); Mol Cell. 59:984-97 (2015); Nat Rev Genet. 17:284-99 (2016); Nature genetics. 51, 1723-1731 (2019); Science 359, 1212-1213 (2018); Mol Cell 59, 984-97 (2015); Nature genetics. 51, 1723–1731 (2019), Nucleic Acids Research, 48, 10867–10876 (2020); Nat Commun Jan 11;13:204 (2022); Nature protocol, 18:755-782 (2023)

Duties

The successful applicant will employ state-of-the-art epigenomic techniques, such as chip-seq/cut&run techniques as well as analyses of single cells and single cell RNA-seq, to identify key features underlying the phenomenon of oncogene gating and its circadian regulation and how it contributes to cancer evolution. The projects will focus on identifying genome wide paterns of gene trafficking and involved regulatory factors using both siRNA libraries and our unique color-based method to assay the CTCF-dependent gating principle (nature comms 2022 and unpublished).

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Other requirements:

A PhD in relevant research areas (molecular and cellular biology) is mandatory. A strong scientific track record, supported by published papers particularly on the subject of chromatin/nuclear architecture research in well-recognized peer-reviewed journals and previous experience in single cell techniques (DNA FISH, scRNA-seq etc) is advantageous. A high level of organizational and communicative skills, as well as an ability to independently perform experiments and implement interpretation of data is mandatory.

Location: Solna, BioClinicum

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system. At the latest 2nd December.
