The research at the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology at KBH is broad and includes preclinical studies in well-equipped laboratories, clinical patient-centered research, nursing research and registry studies. The department also has developed collaborations with strong networks both within and outside the country.

Description of the subject area

The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases has developed collaborations, both within and outside KI, which creates unique opportunities for innovative collaborations to develop treatments and care for children with endocrine disorders and congenital metabolic diseases. The research groups within the division have a very strong position, both nationally and internationally.

The clinical section for pediatric endocrinology and congenital metabolic diseases at Karolinska University Hospital has its operations located in Solna. Early diagnostics with neonatal screening for endocrine and congenital metabolic conditions is nationally centralized at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna. From 1 July 2024, Karolinska University Hospital has been designated as a national center for highly specialized care within congenital metabolic diseases. The hospital also makes a strategic investment in precision medicine, where investigation and treatment of congenital metabolic diseases form an important part of this investment.

Your mission

You will conduct research in pediatric endocrinology with a focus on congenital metabolic diseases with the aim of strengthening and further developing the highly specialized care in congenital metabolic diseases. You will also participate in the further development of the clinical research infrastructure nationally and internationally in this area.

The work duties also include clinical duties. The position is intended to be divided with 51 percent at Karolinska Institutet as professor and 49 percent at Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital at Karolinska University Hospital.

By using your knowledge from research, you will help to implement your own and others' results in clinical practice. In this way, you will contribute to strengthening highly specialized pediatric care as a whole and elevate clinically based research, as well as provide opportunities for research anchoring to further strengthen education in pediatric endocrinology and congenital metabolic diseases.

You are also expected to collaborate with the Center for Clinical Studies in Children (CKB) at Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital, where you can request support to run clinical studies. Furthermore, precision medicine must be implemented in clinical everyday life, which will be an important task for you.

The holder of the position is expected to be involved in various teaching assignments within the subject of pediatric endocrinology and congenital metabolic diseases as well as participate in medical education, specialist courses and postgraduate courses.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with a focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise, excellent scientific expertise and clinical expertise. (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet)  

The employment will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in pediatrics at the Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital at Karolinska University Hospital and therefore you must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in pediatrics, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

The applicant must have training and broad clinical expertise in the field of pediatric endocrinology.

Since the position includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1) and clinical expertise (3).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated

• good cooperation skills with relevant research networks
• research grants received in national or international competition during the last 5 years
• internationally leading research in the subject, measured by the number and quality of publications
• main supervision of doctoral students

It is meritorious that you have demonstrated

• international experience in the subject
• broad clinical experience in pediatrics with specialized knowledge of the treatment of congenital metabolic diseases
• experience of leadership and collaboration

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, or have gained equivalent competence, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
