Description of the subject area

The subject area for the senior lecturer is molecular mechanisms of the immune system, paving the way for improved treatment and diagnostics. It is expected that integration of, e.g., biophysics, synthetic biology, and advanced microscopy will lead to the development of innovative experimental methods enabling studies in cellular physiology, with a focus on how cells interact as collective units. This is part of a larger effort to strengthen the molecular immunological research environment at the department.

Your mission

As Senior Lecturer, you will:

  • Lead the research: You are expected to lead a research group in transdisciplinary cell biology and immunology, focusing on molecular mechanisms.
  • Supervision and education: You will supervise doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers in their research projects and contribute to the education of younger students in biomedicine.
  • Academic engagement: You are expected to actively participate in the academic activities at Karolinska Institutet by organizing courses and seminars, participating in thesis defenses, evaluating research grant applications, and contributing to doctoral education.
  • Development work: You will contribute to the overall development work at Karolinska Institutet.
  • Collaboration and communication: You are expected to facilitate innovative collaborations with both industry and other academic institutions, promote ethical principles in research and clinical practice, communicate your research transparently to the public, and represent Karolinska Institutet at international meetings and conferences

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise. Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

 

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • Scientific skills in biophysics, cell biology and immunology.
  • Your research is of high quality and published in leading scientific journals.
  • Leadership in research by establishing a research group with students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Leadership in teaching through supervision of master's level students, doctoral students, and postdocs.
  • Capacity to organize public outreach activities.
  • Academic collaboration through active involvement in committees and bodies within the university.
  • Capacity to attract competitive intertnational research funding.

It is meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • Initiated and secured funding for research infrastructure in the form of instrumentation that benefits more than just the immediate research group.
  • Local, national and international collaborations.
  • High impact publications in interdisciplinary journals.

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, or have gained equivalent competence, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI
