KTH is building a research and education environment within the research area of Sustainable Production Development (HPU) at the School of Industrial Engineering and Management. KTH:s new campus in Södertälje is developed in close collaboration with Scania and Astra Zeneca focusing production management, production logistics and industrial dependability.
HPU is expanding the research group with a new doctoral student in the area of production management, focusing on the design of new production equipment and factories based on the Lean production concept.
Third-cycle subject: Industrial Engineering and Management
If you are interested in conducting research in the hot topic manufacturing, this is an opportunity. The task is based on the question of how the lean principles could be considered already during the development phase when requirements for new robust production equipment and factories are to be specified, aiming at creating stable processes from the start.
We cooperate with the INDEK department where you as a doctoral student will be admitted to their PhD program “Industrial Economics and Management during the first phase of doctoral studies. The doctoral student position is located at the Department of Sustainable Production Development at KTH's campus in Södertälje, which has the main responsibility for the doctoral student position and supervision. As a PhD student, you are expected to meet the doctoral program's requirements for studies and approval of the doctoral theses. The appointment is five years and includes own learning, research, 20% teaching or other institutional tasks. In addition to the production of research results of good scientific quality, we prioritize the industrial benefit.

As special competence, knowledge of industrial production, production systems and lean production is required. You should have a systems thinking, and ability to think strategically besides excellent skills in English writing and presentation. It is a merit if you have knowledge of development processes for product and production systems. In addition to the eligibility requirements, emphasis is given to personal qualities, suitability and your aspiration in contributing to achieve CO2-neutral production plants. It is a merit that you are skilled in Swedish – or motivated to learn within a short time frame.

Information regarding admission and employment
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study. Decisions on employment as a doctoral student may not be appealed.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
