Police, ambulance or the fire brigade are the services usually associated to sudden events, accidents or catastrophes, or when being exposed to crime. The needs for these services are unevenly distributed among the population; some groups are more exposed, and some areas have fewer services. Providing a level of services that corresponds to individual needs parallel to the needs on a structural level and limited economic resources involves significant challenges. The public sector’s supply is to a growing extent complemented by voluntary sector and private initiatives. We have limited knowledge about this development and there is an urgent need to know more about the consequences.
The position is a 2-year study mapping out the demand of blue light-services in rural areas in Sweden from a user perspective. The research explores different types of spatial data (from official statistics to alternative data sources, such as, from social media) using Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The purpose is also to identify challenges and opportunities following the transformation of these services and the access to them.
Supervision: The position is based at Urban and regional studies which is an interdiciplinary research environment. Principal supervisor is Professor Vania Ceccato
