Leiden Law School is one of the leading European Law Schools, including in the fields of European Law and Public International Law. One of our key aims is to combine cutting edge research with high-level, academic teaching. It is in this context that we are looking for an enthusiastic assistant professor who combines research ambitions with a passion for teaching. Our new colleague will conduct research, independently and in collaboration with colleagues in the university and international networks, and will be part of the Europa Institutes strong team on (European) migration, free-movement and non-discrimination. You will be teaching courses on bachelor and master level and be part of the teaching team of the newly founded, multidisciplinary LL.M. on the Governance of Migration and Diversity [GMD]. In terms of research, the function offers independent research space, freedom and opportunities as a as assistant professor at the Europa Institute of the Faculty of Law in Leiden.

Key responsibilities
Teaching

• Teaching and coordinating courses in the LL.M. Legal Track of the GMD (Governance of Migration and Diversity).
• Teaching at the bachelor and masters level on European law at large;
• Co-supervising PhD and master students.

Research

• Doing research in the field of (European) Migration and Asylum Law and/or EU Free Movement and Citizenship law;
• Publishing in (international, peer-reviewed) scholarly journals;
• Preparing papers for and presenting them at international conferences;
• Initiating and coordinating the submission of proposals for research grants;
• Organizing activities/events, including academic conferences and events including stakeholders from outside academia;
• Performing administrative tasks and participating in administrative bodies within the Institute and the Law Faculty at large (e.g. Board of Examiners, the Master Programme Committee, Diversity Committee, etc.).

Your profile

• We are looking for:
• A researcher with a PhD in European Law or (International / Comparative / European) Migration and/or Asylum Law;
• a proven interest in teaching, preferably demonstrated by experience with teaching at university level;
• the capacity to effectively collaborate in groups;
• willingness to engage in multidisciplinary research and teaching collaborations;
• excellent command of spoken and written English;
• command of Dutch or the willingness to learn Dutch;

The Europa Institute
The Europa Institute of Leiden University is one of the oldest academic institutes specialised in the law of the European Union and the European Convention on Human Rights; it was established in 1957, the same year as the European Economic Community itself.

Maintaining a standard of excellence, the Europa Institute engages in academic research, provides teaching and offers legal advice to the private and public sectors. Through its activities, the Europa Institute contributes to the understanding and development of the rapidly evolving integration in Europe. The Europa Institute is home to the pre-eminent journal on European Union law, the Common Market Law Review.

The former Leiden Institute of Migration Law has joined forces with the Europa Institute in 2020. Research and teaching on migration and asylum law issues in Leiden is since then continued by the Migration Law Cluster of researchers within the Europa Institute.

Terms and conditions
We offer an – initial – 12 months, position as Assistant Professor (Universitair Docent 2) with the possibility of turning into a permanent position after this initial period.

Salary range from € 4.332,- to € 5.929,- (salary scale 11) gross per month on a full-time basis, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification. If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or an equivalent, he/ she must obtain this Qualification within two years.
