Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.
The Department of Computer Science and Media Technology is responsible for a large number of educational programs at basic and advanced levels within computer science, software development, and media technology. It carries out research in several subjects. Within the department’s research profile “Smarter Systems”, several research groups collaborate together addressing research challenges which are related to future software-intensive systems. In this capacity, the department leads one of LNU’s research centers: the Linnaeus University Center on “Data Intensive Sciences and Applications”.
Currently, more than 60 staff members work at the department. The department has a strong connection with other departments of Linnaeus University. In 2019, the university received the right to offer a degree of master of science in engineering. The first educational program in software technology will start in autumn 2020.
The advertised position will be affiliated to the information visualization research group (ISOVIS) led by Professor Andreas Kerren (see http://cs.lnu.se/isovis/). The research group mainly focuses on the explorative analysis and visualization of typically large and complex information spaces, for example in biochemistry, humanities, or software engineering. Our vision is to attack the big data challenge by a combination of human-centered data analysis and interactive visualization for decision making. These research topics are highly relevant for academia and economy as both science and industry make increasing use of data-intensive technologies.
Field of subject for the position: Computer Science with specialization in Information Visualization and Visual Analytics
Placement: Linnaeus University, Växjö, Sweden
Scope of appointment: 100% for 4 years (50% research, 50% teaching/administration). The appointment may be renewed, however not for longer than a total of two years, if more time is required to fulfil the purpose of the appointment because of the associate senior lecturer's sick leave, parental leave, or other specific reasons. Following application for promotion, the associate senior lecturer should be tried for promotion to senior lecturer and appointment for an indefinite period. In accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (HF, chap 4, section 12a), Ordinance (SFS, 2017:844).
Associate senior lecturer is an appointment which through research and pedagogical qualifying gives the opportunity to be promoted to a permanent position as senior lecturer if the needed promotion criteria are fulfilled. The content of the appointment is to consist mainly of research. The appointment should also offer good opportunities for pedagogical qualifying through teaching on different levels as well as other pedagogical qualifying, such as training in teaching and learning in higher education.
The work duties include the whole research cycle, i.e., from literature reviews and the identification of research challenges, throughout the implementation of visualization tools and performing user studies, to reporting of results and publication in highly-ranked journals and conferences in the areas of information visualization and visual analytics.
In addition, the position holder will teach and supervise approximately 50% of full time in courses at different levels (incl. course development/administration), be involved in syllabi and curricula development, and be responsible teacher for courses. The teaching tasks relate to subjects of the ISOVIS research group, as well as to more general courses in computer science and software development.
Upon start of the employment, both a formal research and teaching plan will be together formulated for the entire duration, which will function as a reference for the performance evaluation of the position holder.
Qualified to apply is a person who has defended his/her doctoral thesis, or in other way has acquired the equivalent scientific skills. Primarily a person should be considered who has defended his/her doctoral degree or acquired the equivalent competence no longer than five years before the expiration of the application period (HF, chap. 4, section 4a).
Also, a person who has defended his/her doctoral thesis or acquired equivalent competence at an earlier stage may be considered if there are special reasons for this. Special reasons refer to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. Ordinance (2017:844). An applicant with a doctoral degree that is older than five years should motivate in his/her application why special reasons should be taken into account.
In order to qualify for this appointment, the candidate must have a PhD degree in Computer Science or related subject. Eligibility for this position also requires that the doctoral thesis has a major focus on information visualization, visual analytics, or human-computer interaction.
Further assessment criteria are documented expertise within the following research/educational topics:
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required, preferably documented in the form of papers published in well-known journals and/or presented in well-known conferences in the area of Information Visualization and/or Visual Analytics. Teamwork experiences, such as previous work in national/international research projects, should also be documented in the application.
Since the subject of computer science is male-dominated, we encourage female applicants. Applicants will be selected through a qualitative overall assessment of the documented competences and skills, focusing on the suitability to conduct teaching and research and to contribute to a successful development of the research group and the department.
In the overall assessment of an applicant's skills, particular significance will be attached to the applicant's potential to have a successful career as a teacher and researcher.
In connection to any application for promotion, after a 4-years period as associate senior lecturer, the candidate is expected to meet the following criteria:
Individual salary-setting is applied. The last application date is August 20, 2019
