Assistant/Associate/Full Professor/Professor of Practice - Strategic and Security Studies

National Defense College (NDC) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) invites applications from qualified candidates for multiple full-time, open rank, faculty positions supporting the ongoing growth of the National Defense College as a premier institution of higher learning and strategic thought in the UAE and the region.  The primary purpose of these positions is to design, develop, and deliver the College's in-residence educational programs in Strategic and Security Studies and produce scholarly research in Arabic and/or English focused on local, regional, and international strategic and security issues relevant to the UAE and the region. Applicants’ bilingual in Arabic and English will receive preference for employment.

Job Description:

Full-time faculty positions at NDC involve teaching graduate-level courses in strategic and security studies, advising and mentoring participants within the institution, conducting research in their fields of expertise relevant to the College mission and academic program, participating in service to the college, outreach, and partnership-building, including teaching on short executive education courses as required. Effective communication and teamwork skills are sought. Support and collaboration with colleagues and administrators from diverse backgrounds are required.

The annual teaching load of the College is capped at 18 credits, though NDC endeavors to limit teaching to 12 credits when possible. Candidates should be able to contribute to three or more core courses in the existing interdisciplinary curriculum and develop an elective in their area of expertise. NDC follows an andragogic seminar model in graduate teaching, so the ability to lead facilitated seminars in English or Arabic is essential. An active research agenda is also required, with publication expectations of one peer-reviewed article, book chapter, or the equivalent per year. Academic rank will be determined by years of teaching experience and scholarship profile. 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

The incumbent must have the following essential qualifications:

1. Terminal Degree (PhD) from an internationally recognized university in a discipline directly related to Strategic and Security Studies or a master’s degree in a discipline directly related to Strategic and Security Studies combined with significant and relevant experience as a practitioner in a related field.
2. Teaching: Evidence of a minimum of 3 years teaching at the graduate level, including curriculum development and supervision of student research theses, or equivalent experience as a practitioner 
3. Research: Active research and scholarship profile within his/her discipline or area of specialization.
4. Communication: excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing.
5. Knowledge: demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of international security affairs, including the political and security issues of the Middle East. 

Desirable

The following will be considered an advantage: 

Subject Matter Expertise in the following disciplines as they relate to Strategic and Security Studies: 

• Cyber Security
• Artificial Intelligence
• International Law
• Strategic Leadership
• Military History/Strategy
• Wargaming/Modelling & Simulation 

Professional Experience in his/her applied field as a policy practitioner at the national and/or international level. 

Language: Fluency (speaking, reading, writing) in both NDC operative languages: Arabic and English.

Benefits:

The compensation package includes a competitive salary and allowances for housing, transportation, education fees for eligible minor children, cost of living, and health insurance. The start date is flexible, but ideally no later than August 2024.
