We are looking for a senior lecturer in mechanical engineering for a permanent position at the School of Science and Technology.
The subject area for this position is Mechanical Engineering.
The Mechanical Engineering Unit at Örebro University is responsible for the teaching courses in the subject within the Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Engineering education programs. Research within the subject is concentrated to a couple of different areas. One of these is focused on production systems and modelling of reliability and availability of such systems, and by filling this vacancy we intend to further strengthen our capacity and competence in this area of research and teaching.
At Örebro University, a senior lecturer is expected to spend their working hours on teaching at all levels, research, and any associated public engagement activities. In addition to education, research and collaboration, duties and responsibilities include development work, administration and continuing professional development. Moreover, teaching encompasses tutoring, examination, course development, planning and evaluation.
The candidate is expected to carry out teaching and research in the areas of production development.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development and teaching of courses on production development with an emphasis on the use of discrete event simulation and analysis of system availability modelling.
The research work involves collaborations with industrial and academic partners to develop state-of-the-art simulation models of the operation of production systems to predict system availability and costs. The research will involve joint work with academic and industrial partners to develop the modelling and its software implementation so that it supports increased sustainability in production through improved decision support. The candidate should have an engineering or computer science background and demonstrate strong competences in the reliability modelling, simulation, and optimization of production systems. The candidate should be experienced in the application of system reliability modelling and optimization methods for complex systems. Experience with developing and implementing discrete event simulation models of production systems using object-oriented programming languages is also essential. A suitable candidate has competences covering most of the above-mentioned requirements.
Those qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer are applicants who have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a doctoral degree in a subject matter relevant for the position, or have the corresponding research competence or other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the position and the duties that it will involve.
A general eligibility criterion for teaching staff at Örebro University is that they have completed courses on teaching and learning in higher education corresponding to 10 weeks. Knowledge and skills equivalent to such courses may also be assessed to establish whether these provide eligibility. A teacher who at the time of appointment lacks such training or the equivalent competence, must complete the required courses within two years of taking up the position.
When appointing teaching staff, both the applicant’s research expertise and their teaching expertise will be assessed, and they are to be given equal attention. The assessment is also to consider the applicant’s qualifications and experience from collaboration with the wider community, of which the university is a part, as well as national and international experience and mobility. Teachers are to have the ability to communicate and disseminate information; collaborate and engage with the wider community; and facilitate utilisation of the university’s research. In addition, the applicant’s suitability for the position will be assessed. Suitability refers to the applicant demonstrating the personal qualities required to successfully fulfil the duties and responsibilities at hand; to be able to cooperate with other members of staff; and to contribute to the development of university operations.
Research expertise is to be demonstrated through independent research contributions and continued scientific publishing following the award of the doctoral degree. Importance shall also be attached to the candidate’s establishment in the research community as well as to their experience of planning, administrating, and leading their own research.
The assessment of the research will focus on the quality and quantity of prior publications in the field described under “Duties and responsibilities” and on experience of applying for and obtaining external research grants.
When defining teaching expertise at Örebro University, three categories are used: teaching approach, how the teaching approach is put into practice, and professional development as a teacher. The applicant’s teaching qualifications are therefore to be documented accordingly and in compliance with Örebro University’s template for teaching portfolios, relating clearly to the values set out in Örebro University’s educational philosophy.
Teaching expertise is to be demonstrated through varying degrees of contributions within teaching, such as planning, execution, evaluation and follow up of teaching activities, as well as supervision and examination. The applicant must be able to account for their teaching outlook and approach and be able to reflect on their own pedagogical development as well as on the teacher’s role. The applicant is also expected to have contributed to educational development.
The successful candidate should preferably have prior documented experience from teaching of courses on production development, including system reliability and availability.

As a person you have great collaborative skills, being able to work together with co-workers, students, and external stakeholders.
Very good communication skills (orally, and in writing), in Swedish and English, are mandatory. If this requirement is not fulfilled for one of the languages a recruitment is still possible if you work actively to acquire the necessary language skills to be able to teach in both Swedish and English in the future.
This is a permanent full-time position. At Örebro University, salary depends on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, and positions announced are, where appropriate, subject to a trial period.
