Södertörn University is investing in the field of media and is advertising three professorships: in journalism; media technology; and media and communication studies. In a time of rapid technological change, the role of media in society is changing both its form and its content. Media research in the borderlands between technology, society and culture is becoming increasingly important for our critical understanding of the information society. The three professors will lead and develop multidisciplinary research into this new media landscape, with special responsibility for research related to the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe. This is done in each subject, through cooperation with the surrounding community and in various multidisciplinary contexts.
Journalism is one of the larger subjects at Södertörn University and is part of the School of Social Sciences. There is extensive research in journalism, focusing on media development and digital media. One focus in Södertörn University’s research is Central and Eastern Europe. We offer two Bachelor’s degrees and two one-year Master’s degrees that prepare students for further research, as well as courses for professional development. The subject unites theory and practice and has a particular focus on new forms of media and media development.
The new professor in Journalism will further develop research in the subject, with a particular focus on the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe. The professor will contribute to a strong and multidisciplinary research environment at Södertörn University by cooperating with other subjects at the university. The position includes research-related tasks at 60 per cent of full-time. These are divided between the professor’s own research and the development of the subject, including leading higher seminars and applications for external research funding in cooperation with other researchers. In the remaining time, the professor will actively participate in teaching, examination and course development, at both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. Teaching is conducted in Swedish, as well as in English on the international Master’s programme. The new professor is also expected to work actively to strengthen cooperation between the three media subjects and the surrounding community. The position requires a high degree of presence and participation in collegial work.
To qualify for employment as a professor of Journalism, the applicant must have demonstrated educational and scholarly expertise in the subject of Journalism or in Media and Communication Studies specialising in Journalism.
