The Department of Aquatic resources produces key knowledge in limnic, brackish-water and marine ecology, with a focus on fish and shellfish. A postdoctoral position is available to study the humic substance-driven (darkwater) adaptation in perch by joining the research group of Prof. Anti Vasemägi at the Institute of Freshwater Research, Department of Aquatic Resources, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Research in the Vasemägi group focuses on understanding the relationships between genotype and phenotype, genetic basis of adaptation and how contemporary natural- and human-induced selection works on ecological time-scales.
The project aims to shed light on molecular mechanisms and ecological consequences of humic substance-driven (darkwater) adaptation, using Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) as a model species. We will combine whole genome and transcriptome sequencing, measurements of ecologically relevant phenotypic variation and whole organism performance within common-garden framework. The post-doctoral fellow will help analyze already collected genomic and transcriptomic data and carry on common garden experiments.
The position is one of three exciting postdoctoral positions in advanced ecology and genomics initiated at the same time at the Department. All of these projects will resolve key ecological issues and produce knowledge needed for responding to a major societal challenge: sustainable food production in future climates. You will be part of our team working with molecular ecology and population genomics of aquatic organisms. The principal responsibilities include analyses of next-generation sequencing data, writing manuscripts and keeping detailed notes and logs of the analyses.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a PhD degree in evolutionary biology, genomics, bioinformatics, or similar field. Suitable applicants will have a strong background in next generation sequencing data analysis, transcriptomics and/or population genomics as demonstrated by publications in relevant fields. Candidates should be familiar with one or more programming languages (such as Python, Perl, or R). Excellent communication skills in both oral and written English are expected. Candidates should be able to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Fixed term employment of 2 years.
