The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation (KADK) invites applications for a fixed-term, full-time position as a professor WSR within design, technology and materials with a focus on sustainability. With the professor WSR position, we wish to reinforce the technological content in the design education, supplement our research and teaching competences within design and technology in a wide perspective, and strengthen our networks and external collaborative partnerships, both nationally and internationally. With this professorship WSR, KADK wishes in particular to cultivate an agenda where new materials, technology and digital production are seen as driving factors in a sustainable readjustment within products and services.
The vacant professorship WSR, which is affiliated with the Institute of Architecture and Design, should ideally be filled as of 1 June 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.
New technologies affect, change and increase possibilities within the design field. Products, materials and solutions are increasingly developed along with the use and integration of advanced digital technologies, and in the user phase, products form part of larger networks and systems. New production logics are at play during the design and development phase, where users and markets also play an integrated role. At the same time, attention to sustainability is crucial, both in the production phase and throughout the entire lifecycle of the products. Concepts such as cradle-to-cradle, up-cycling, rewinding, design for disassembly etc. are examples of key sustainable strategies that can form part of the development of products, solutions and materials.
For the professorship WSR, we are looking for a candidate who can undertake research and teaching in advanced digital production, and who can supplement the institute's environment within materials and technology. The ideal candidate is capable of bridging the gap between digital and analogue technologies, has updated, relevant knowledge of technology, preferably experience from practice within design or related fields, experience with design processes and methods, updated and relevant knowledge about new technologies as well as experience with digital production in practice. Experience with the development of LABs/workshops in close dialogue with knowledge development, research and teaching is an advantage.
The institute where the position will be placed currently conducts teaching and research in the crossfield between design and architecture: furniture, product design, glass, ceramics, clothing, textiles, lighting, interior design, and architecture. As a professor WSR, you must see the potential in developing this crossfield and be able to challenge scale, materials and academic/professional traditions, and you should be open to collaboration across KADK's academic environments and external networks. You will become a driving force in building up a distinctive field, in which technology, digital production and materials are in focus, with KADK's workshops (KADK:LAB) as the natural platform for experiments and testing.
We are looking for a visionary academic profile who is dedicated to delivering results and disseminating knowledge, someone who can contribute to the further development and rethinking of the design profession with a particular focus on the possibilities and perspectives that technological development offers us, while at the same time being able to relate those possibilities to the critical ethical and societal questions that also accompany technological development. With a focus on process and method as well as the application of the most recent knowledge, the right candidate will be expected to be able to add topical scientific and/or artistic weight at the highest professional level to the design fields.
Ideally, the position will be filled by an internationally recognised candidate with a wide professional background in design. We are particularly looking for a candidate who has distinguished himself/herself within scientific and/or artistic research, and who has extensive teaching experience.
The Institute of Architecture and Design is a cross-disciplinary educational and research environment. Taking its starting point in a Danish tradition for working with design in a spatial and architectural context, the institute has an ambition to set a new agenda in the development of business and competence areas for architects and designers. The institute consists of two Bachelor programmes, four Master's programmes, and an artistic professional Bachelor programme (Bornholm). These form the framework for the professional research and development environments across design and architecture. At the institute, teaching and research focus on architecture, building art, entrepreneurship, spatial and interior design, and furniture, product, textile and clothing design. Finally, the Craft programme at Bornholm and the School of Architecture's IT and drawing teaching are also part of the institute.
The position as a professor WSR will consist of scientific and/or artistic research, teaching, academic management, external communication, contribution to the development of the institute and the design programme's cross-disciplinary teaching, as well as strategic sparring with the institute management, as well as with the management of the School of Design and KADK.

You have a relevant education at Master's degree level as a minimum and a PhD degree or qualifications at PhD level. You have completed a period as an assistant professor or have equivalent pedagogical qualifications, and you have experience from an associate professorship or equivalent qualifications.

In addition, you can document a high degree of original scientific production at an international level, including development of the subject area, practice of artistic research at the highest international level or a significant design career at a high international level.
Furthermore, you have solid experience with teaching and supervision at Bachelor's, Master's and PhD levels, have received supervision, undertaken pedagogical skills development, and received a positive written assessment of your teaching qualifications. KADK also requires candidates to have completed and passed a teacher training course, and to provide documentation for this. In exceptional cases, exemptions can be granted from the teacher training course requirement, if the candidate can document having completed and passed another pedagogical education from a recognised educational institution, e.g. as a teacher or MA in Education.
You have well-documented experience with the development, funding and management of large, externally funded research projects and projects to which business collaboration is affiliated.
In the overall assessment for the appointment to this position, particular importance will be attached to qualified efforts and new developments within the teaching area.
Experience with the development of LABs/workshops in close dialogue with knowledge development, research and teaching is an advantage.
Importance will also be attached to your ability to handle research management and possibly other managerial functions.
We offer a strong, academic, ambitious, creative and internationally recognised professional environment with rapid development among researchers, teachers and students alike. The professorship WSR is limited to a fixed term of five years, with a possible extension of a further three years. At the end of the professorship period, you will transfer to employment as an associate professor.
