Professor/Associate professor/Assistant Professor in Coastal zone management

Professor/Associate professor/Assistant Professor in Coastal zone management

The University of Agder invites applications for a permanent 10 % position, as Professor/Associate professor/Assistant Professor in Coastal zone management at the Department of Natural Sciences. The position is currently located at Campus Kristiansand. The starting date is negotiable with the Faculty.

The Department of Natural Sciences presently has about 43 employees teaching and researching biology, bioengineering and natural sciences in teacher education programs.

The position is part of the department’s strategy for developing a new research group in marine ecology. The research will be conducted largely in cooperation with the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) at the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA).

Description of the position

Our new colleague is expected to take part in teaching and supervision of students and to further develop the newly established master’s and PhD programme in coastal ecology.

To fulfil the academic profile of the staff, we seek expertise in the understanding of the management processes in the coastal zone area both nationally and internationally. The candidate is expected to have a strong background from both a theoretical perspective, analysing capabilities and practical experience. The candidate is expected to have experience from leading large inter-disciplinary research projects. The candidate is also expected to have a good understanding of anthropogenic environmental impacts including effects of fisheries and marine protected areas. We also expect candidates who are productive in their ability to publish in international peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications and terms

It is expected that the Professor/Associate professor/Assistant Professor will work with colleagues and contribute to further development of the marine research group at UiA.

The applicant must hold a master’s degree or equivalent degree with a specialisation in marine biology or a related field. Experience in a broad variety of marine and environmental management processes is a prerequisite. The position place high demands on the applicant’s capacity for independent goal-oriented work. Applicants will be assessed based on academic background and results, attainment, and previous research and project acquisition. Relevant practical experience, personal suitability and good teamwork skills will also be emphasised.

Applicants must be able to document relevant teaching competence based on education and/or practical experience. If the candidate lacks basic teaching competence, it will be required that she/he obtains such qualifications, or complete UiA’s Foundation Course in Education for University Lecturers, within two years.

A high level of proficiency in spoken and written English is required.

The language of instruction is Norwegian/Scandinavian and English.

Applicants who do not speak Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are expected to acquire the necessary proficiency to lecture in Norwegian. The University of Agder offers Norwegian language courses to international employees with little or no knowledge of Norwegian and facilitates participation in such courses. Permanently employed staff is expected to acquire a good command of oral and written Norwegian within two years. This is to be documented by passing the Bergen test with a score of minimum 450 points.

Short-listed applicants will be invited for interviews and a demonstration of their teaching qualifications, usually in the form of a trial lecture. With the applicant’s permission, UiA will also conduct a reference check before the appointment.

The position is remunerated according to the State salary scale, salary plan 17.510, code 1013/1532 Professor, gross salary per year NOK 623 900-910 900, code 1011/1198 Associate Professor, gross salary per year NOK 508 800-650 200 or code 1009 Assistant Professor, gross salary per year NOK 474 700-579 300. Higher salary may be offered to applicants with superior qualifications. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
