The University of Oulu is one of the biggest and most multidisciplinary universities in Finland. We are an international science community working in close cooperation with research institutes, companies, and the public sector. Together we form a globally significant research hub, relentlessly pushing the boundaries of known for a more sustainable and intelligent future.
The Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Unit (http://www.oulu.fi/water) announces two doctoral student positions for research on i) wastewater purification systems governance, performance and environmental impacts and ii) groundwater resources governance, quality and safety.
We are looking for talented and motivated students aspiring to become world-leading scientists. The selected applicants will work on research tasks from different national and international projects. This will provide the doctoral candidates with excellent opportunities to form an extensive network as well as to be involved in a dynamic and enthusiastic research atmosphere. Projects involved on the doctoral research of both positions are e.g., ON-SITE (Small-scale wastewater treatment systems: governance, efficiency, resources recovery, environment contamination risks and innovative solutions for processes optimization), RaMiKo (Removal of nutrients and microplastics in treatment wetlands purifying sewage water in cold climate regions) and Microbial fauna in small scale groundwater abstraction wells: new methods and risk assessment and continuous monitoring of groundwater for water safety.
The research unit consist of experts in hydrology and water resources engineering, water and wastewater purification processes, energy systems, resources recovery and environmental engineering. The PhD candidates will be supervised by professor Bjørn Kløve, post-doctoral research fellows Elisangela Heiderscheidt, Heini Postila and Pekka Rossi. The PhDs will join a multinational group of 20 PhD students and 12 post-doctoral researchers. The candidates will follow the University of Oulu ( http://www.oulu.fi/university/) doctoral training program leading to the degree of Doctor of Science (Technology).
Responsibilities and Required Qualifications
Successful candidates are expected to have a MSc degree in environmental or civil engineering, water and sanitation engineering, water resources engineering, soil science or microbiology (or equivalent degree) by 1st May, 2019 (starting date). Experience in field measurements and environmental sampling is an advantage. Both positions require good overall communication skills and fluent written and oral English language. Fluent oral Finnish language skills is also the requirement for one of the two positions, as direct stakeholders contact is necessary. Teaching and supervision responsibilities at Bachelor or Master level can be expected as part of the PhD education.
