The Faculty of Humanities at the University invites applications for the position of Professor in the field of English. The employment contract will be fixed term (1.8.2019–30.7.2021).
The reason for fixed term nature is running of a vacant position.
The position is located at the School of Languages and Translation Studies at the Department of English. Beside this position there are three other professors, and nine university teachers or researches at the department of English.
The department’s research and teaching profile emphasizes five themes: history of English and philology; text and discourse; literature; translation studies, and second language acquisition. Research is also conducted across the boundaries of departments in, for example, language contact and code-switching studies, history of translation, and translation technology.
The position requires the ability to plan curricula, teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and conduct research in the professor’s own research field.
The professor is in charge especially of the linguistically oriented Second Language Acquisition track and its teaching, research and development. In addition the professor will take part in the work of the degree programme in language learning and teaching in the field of English.

A person selected for the post must hold a doctoral degree, high level scientific proficiency, experience in the management of scientific research, evidence of international co-operation in his/her field, and the ability to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise dissertations. When assessing an applicant’s merits, scientific publications and other research outcomes of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, ability to produce study materials, other teaching merits and a teaching demonstration as well as participation in doctoral education will be taken into account. Of particular importance are merits in research and education as well as acquisition of external funding. Activity in international scientific community and societal impact are considered special merits. As the professor’s supervision duties mostly concern research on Finnish learners of English, excellent Finnish language skills are considered a benefit.
The post is subject to a six month trial period.
The salary for this particular post is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. The task specific salary component for the Professor is 4719,77–6954,87 euros per month (according to level 8–11 of the job demands chart). In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal work performance component is a maximum of 50% of the task-specific salary component. The salary will be specified and negotiated when preparing the employment contract.
