The Institute for European Studies (IES) is a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence of the VUB. Its research focuses on the EU in an international context. The work at the IES is interdisciplinary and specifically explores EU institutions, policies and law within the context of globalization and global governance. Subject area: Political Science/International Relations

Teaching/research area: Inter-organizational approaches to European and Global Security Governance

  • Teaching

The Institute for European Studies seeks to appoint a Research Professor (80% ZAP) of International Affairs in the area of ‘inter-organizational approaches to European and global security governance’. The post holder is expected to carry out research and provide teaching on the theory and practice of cooperation and rivalry between regional and international organizations in the field governing traditional and emerging security challenges. This also includes an emphasis on the changing nature of diplomacy. Particular emphasis should be placed on the European Union’s relations with the United Nations, NATO and other relevant organizations in the areas of peacekeeping, peacebuilding and the governance of emerging security issues.

  • Research

In addition, research is expected in the field of European and international diplomacy. A track-record of research in these areas as well as demonstrated experience in innovative teaching and educational programme development in the above-mentioned areas is essential.

  • Other
    • The post will also include management tasks – a strong track-record in higher education management in an international setting is therefore a strong requirement;
    • The postholder is expected to facilitate strong cooperation between academia, think tanks and the policy-maker scene and should therefore demonstrate strong networking skills and the ability to devise and convene high-level policy fora and events;
    • A demonstrated ability to attract external funding is also essential;
    • Act as a promoter of master theses for Master students;
    • Conduct research in one of the research clusters of the IES;
    • Help in developing outreach activities such as Policy Forums and other events;
    • Enhance the IES’s capacity to attract external funding and to cooperate with other institutions.

Profile

  • A PhD in the fields of International Relations or Political Science;
  • An active research agenda and publication track-record in the fields European and global security governance, including inter-organizational relations in peace and security (including EU-UN and EU-NATO cooperation), global security governance (including crisis management, peacekeeping and peacebuilding) as well as diplomacy;
  • Demonstrated track-record of the ability to attract external grants from international and national sources;
  • Managerial and leadership skills in the area of higher education, including experience in programme; development at undergraduate, graduate and executive training level;
  • Familiarity with Belgian programme accreditation and re-accreditation processes and requirements in the realm of quality assurance;
  • Demonstrated ability to work at the intersection of academic and policy-oriented think tank research;
  • Demonstrated ability to devise and organize high-level policy events with policy-makers and representatives from major international organizations active in the fields of European and global security governance;
  • Fluency and proficiency in English (CAE-level English (Certificate in Advanced English -C1));
  • Ability to operate in, and to provide guidance to, a multicultural academic team of students;
  • Knowledge of other (European) languages is considered an asset;

Every first appointment is dependent upon the successful delivery of a teaching session.

Members of academic faculty with teaching duties are required to prove their command of the teaching language. E.g.: for teaching in English, the candidate provides evidence of proficiency in English at C1 level by submitting a language certificate (or a waiver).

Both our campuses are set within green oases on the outskirts of the centre of the capital of Flanders, Belgium and Europe. This centre, with all its opportunities, is within your reach by public transport in under half an hour.

Depending on your experience and academic merits you will receive a salary on one of the pay scales laid down by the government. Hospitalisation cover and free use of public transport for travel to and from work are standard conditions of employment. If you would rather cycle to work, compensation is also available for that. Both campuses have extensive sporting facilities which are at your disposal and a nursery is within walking distance.

  • Planned starting date: 01/11/2018
  • Length of contract: Recruitment in the rank of lecturer is a tenure track appointment which implies an initial appointment as lecturer for a period of 5 years with eligibility for tenure in the rank of senior lecturer by the end of this initial period. Recruitment in other academic ranks is an initial appointment for 3 years with eligibility for tenure in the same rank by the end of this initial period.
