About the Department:

The Department is seeking applications in all areas of legal scholarship but particularly from those who have research interests in and can teach at least two of the following areas: Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Law of Contract, Ghana Legal System and Methods, Law of Torts, Law of Immovable Property, Conflict of Laws, Commercial Law, Company Law, Jurisprudence, International trade and investment Law, Law of Taxation, Intellectual Property Law, Equity & Succession, Administrative Law, environmental law, Gender and the Law, Corporate Insolvency Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Law and technology, and the Law of Evidence.

The successful candidates will be expected to engage in advanced study and research in Law, and to give high quality tutorials, classes, lectures, and academic supervision to undergraduate students, participate in examining, and take part in Faculty administration as requested by the Head of Department. 

Applicants should have a first degree in Law (e.g., LLB, BA(Jurisprudence) or JD), and a postgraduate research degree in Law (e.g., LLM, MPHIL, PhD, D Phil and SJD). Applicants who do not have a research postgraduate degree in Law are also encouraged to apply if there is evidence of a strong publication record and relevant experience in teaching, legal practice, or the judiciary. 

Successful candidates will join in the creation of a lively and intellectually stimulating research community which will publish truly impactful work and inspires students with our teaching. The appointees will have, or be on the way to establishing, a record of locally and/or internationally recognised scholarship and research and will be required to provide a high standard of research-led teaching at the under­graduate level, including the supervision of final year capstone research projects.

Role Summary:

You will conduct research that will establish the Department's reputation as a hub of excellent research, contribute to the Department's teaching and supervision at the undergraduate level, and contribute to the administrative work of the Department.

Work Processes and Results

Leadership:

  • Undertake administrative roles and duties within the Department as appropriate to support whole Departmental development.
  • Participate in the continuous review, quality assurance and development of the curriculum for existing programmes, contributing to and overseeing the design, development and launch of new programmes.

Research:

  • Pursue high quality research that advances the Department’s research strategy.
  • Publish excellent research output in appropriate journals of local & international standing
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences, as appropriate
  • Apply for research grants or contracts that will help deliver research outputs of international excellence as an individual or part of a collaboration.
  • Seek to enhance the research output’s impact and public engagement, as appropriate.
  • Contribute fully to the culture of the Department through active and consistent participation at research seminars, events and meetings, provision of feedback on colleagues’ papers and grant applications etc.
     

Teaching:

  • Contribute to teaching, supervision, marking and course administration on the Department’s undergraduate courses.
  • Teach lectures, seminars, and tutorials as appropriate.
  • Undertaking academic duties, e.g., setting assessments, marking, invigilation, according to Department procedures.
  • Co-operate with members of other subject groups and partners from outside Ashesi in the planning and delivery of collaborative and interdisciplinary teaching
  • Provide support and guidance for students and undertaking any required pastoral support of students
  • Maintain a broad knowledge of up-to-date research and scholarship in the relevant fields to ensure that teaching is of the quality expected by a leading University.
  • Comply with University and Department standards and procedures for ensuring teaching quality and contributing to the development and implementation of Department standards and procedures.

Senior Lecturer in Law Person Specification

Qualifications/Education/ Training

  • First degree in Law (e.g., LLB, BA(Jurisprudence) or JD), or a closely related subject.
  • PhD completed in Law, Postgraduate research degree in Law (e.g., LLM, MPHIL, PhD, D Phil and SJD) or comparable research record. Candidates who do not have a research postgraduate degree in Law are encouraged to apply if there is evidence of a strong publication record and relevant experience in teaching, legal practice, or the judiciary.
  • Knowledge of research and scholarship in relevant subject areas
  • Familiar with core curriculum of relevant subject areas
  • Professional teaching qualification is desirable.

Experience

  • Experience of publishing articles and/or monographs which could be rated as internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance, and rigour.
  • Experience of presentation at academic conferences or similar settings
  • Experience of teaching in relevant areas
  • Ability to contribute to curriculum development, teaching and supervision in stated areas of expertise.
  • Willingness to engage in writing or co-writing grant applications.
  • A record of research publications that includes work that could be rated as internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance, and rigour is desirable.
  • Experience as Module Leader at a Higher Education Institute is desirable.
  • Awareness and understanding of research income sources and processes is desirable.
  • Experience with learning technologies will be an added advantage.
  • Experience of writing or co-writing grant applications will be an advantage.

  • An ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of colleagues, both within and outside the University sector
  • An ability and willingness to actively contribute to the Department’s research culture and environment.
  • A demonstrable awareness of the importance of pursuing pathways to impact 
  • Excellent presentational skills
  • Capable of organising and leading projects (including but not limited to academic programmes)
  • Potential to generate substantial research grant income.
