Starting as junior professors, they are appointed normally as civil servants for a period of three years. These positions are extended for additional three years if the junior professors have successfully passed an interim evaluation. After a positive tenure evaluation in the sixth year, the candidates are appointed professors (legal basis: W 2, permanent professorship). Both evaluation procedures are based on a target agreement which is part of the appointment negotiations. The target agreement and a written confirmation verifying the negotiated financial and personal resources of the professorship are an integral part of the acceptance agreement between university and candidates.
