DIFFER (Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research) is one of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) institutes and focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to energy research, combining physics, chemistry, engineering and materials science. The institute is based on two main strands, solar fuels for the conversion and storage of renewable energy and fusion-energy as clean and unlimited source of energy. DIFFER is developing and supporting a national network on fundamental energy research and is closely collaborating with academic institutions, research institutes and industry. The institute is located in a new building at the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).
Modelling non-equilibrium plasmas for CO2 activation is very challenging due to the complex network of chemical reactions and different timescales for the physical and chemical processes involved. An accurate description of electron kinetics is fundamental to calculate chemical rate coefficients and transport parameters that are used to describe the plasma discharge. In the CPPC group, we develop fast and accurate computational approaches for electron kinetics. This MSc project focuses on the application of those approaches to CO2 plasmas investigated experimentally at DIFFER. Extension of the current zero-dimensional model to one dimension in space is possible, depending on the interest of the student.
Expertise needed: Plasma physics/chemistry or Chemistry, Computer Science or Applied Mathematics.
Intended level: MSc-student.
