PhD in Metal-assisted Chemical Etching for X-ray Gratings Microfabrication

The X-ray Imaging Professorship  is dedicated to advancing the clinical application of gratings-based X-ray interferometry. This groundbreaking technology depends on the development of state-of-the-art X-ray optics through the latest micro- and nanofabrication techniques.

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our SNF-funded project, ABSOLUTE, under the guidance of our micro- and nanofabrication expert, Dr. Lucia Romano. As part of our multidisciplinary team of academic and industry researchers, you will have the chance to contribute to the ongoing development of this innovative technology.

Project background

The SNSF-funded project ABSOLUTE (nAnoassemBled catalySt and electrOchemicaL processing for hUge aspecTratio microstructurEs)  aims to develop a novel catalyst approach for defect control in metal-assisted chemical etching (MacEtch) of silicon. The ultimate goal is to create high aspect ratio absorption gratings for X-ray grating-based interferometry, used in diagnostic imaging in collaboration with our spin-off company, GratXray. Your primary focus will be on catalyst synthesis and MacEtch processing.

Job description

You will perform high-end research on:

  • Synthesis and characterization of catalyst pattern with 3D porosity by electrodeposition methods
  • Synthesis and process optimization of high aspect ratio microstructured gratings by metal assisted chemical etching
  • Morphological and defects characterization of the gratings

You are expected to:

  • Present results at international conferences and symposia as well as internal workshop
  • Summarize your results in scientific publications
  • Support the professorship in teaching activities

Profile

  • Excellent qualifications with a university degree (Master or equivalent) in physics, chemistry or materials sciences
  • Knowledge in the physics of semiconductors and experience of clean room environment would be a benefit
  • You are a team player that is highly self-motivated and committed, highly organized, detail-oriented and you enjoy practical work and like to conduct research in a team
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken)

We offer

Our organization operates on the principles of interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and dynamism. As a valued member of our team, you can expect to receive comprehensive on-the-job training, as well as access to various personal and professional development opportunities. Additionally, we foster a strong culture of vocational training, which will enable you to enhance your skillset and advance your career.

We recognize the importance of achieving a healthy work-life balance, and as such, we offer modern employment conditions and on-site infrastructure to support you in optimizing your schedule to accommodate your personal interests and family commitments.
