Vacancy type Research staff

Job description

We are seeking a dedicated and qualified Master to undertake sociological research on the transformation of the “knowledge society” in the 21st century digital era, in particular through the generalization of algorithmic tools across social institutions.
This project aims to gain an in-depth understanding of this transformation at multiple levels of analysis. At the macro-level, we are interested in an analysis of the growing segregation of “human capital”, for example between innovative, ideas-producing regions (such as “smart cities”) and more traditional, goods-producing regions with an emerging “cybertariat”. At the meso- and micro-level, we intend to zoom in on the genesis or transformation of different forms of (un)paid knowledge production, both within formal organizations (employment), public life (activism), and as part of everyday life (parenting, tracking daily habits with apps).
The project is accordingly divided in different work packages with mixed methods, and different case studies are possible, focusing on both the promises and pitfalls of new forms of digital knowledge production, consumption and capitalization. The project will be embedded in the Center for Social Theory (https://www.ugent.be/ps/sociologie/en/research/cst).
This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of a sociological “consciousness” about new societal challenges. As part of our research team, you will have the opportunity to develop specialized skills in sociology and gain valuable experience in interdisciplinary research contexts. You will meet and interact with several (international) partners working in this historically-sensitive and future-oriented project.
At least 90% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of your doctoral dissertation.
You will contribute to publications, presentations and other dissemination and communication material; and collaborate with other stakeholders to gather relevant data, discuss your research results and formulate policy suggestions.
