Department RE22 - Department of European, Public and International Law

Contract Limited duration

Degree Doctor of Laws

Occupancy rate 100%

Vacancy type Research staff

Job description

  • You actively work on the preparation and defense of a doctoral dissertation on "Internal judicial independence in the Belgian legal order". More specifically, you conduct research into the question whether this principle, also in the light of European (human rights) standards, is sufficiently respected in Belgium, with an extra emphasis on the pressure that can come from court presidents on lower judges.
  • You publish scientific articles on the topic of your doctoral research and present your research results at conferences.
  • You undertake a limited package of teaching and research support tasks for the Faculty of Law and Criminology of Ghent University and the Department of European, Public and International Law.

Job profile

  • You hold a master's degree in law. The diploma requirements must be met on the date of appointment.
  • You submit a research proposal (in Dutch or English) on the research to be developed (see above). This research proposal of maximum 7 pages contains the following sections: ‘state of the art’, ‘research objectives’ and ‘methodology’ and ‘bibliography’. The proposal must allow the doctoral research to be successfully completed within a period of four years.

The preceding conditions are admissibility requirements.

  • You can present strong study results, especially in constitutional law. Strong results and demonstrable interest in human rights and judicial organisation are a plus.
  • You have a strong interest in academic research in the broader field of constitutional law.
  • You have strong language skills enabling qualitative scientific research. A (at least passive) knowledge of Dutch, French and English is strongly recommended. Knowledge of additional languages is considered an asset.
  • You have good written and oral skills and can share your research results with a wider audience.
  • You are able to plan and organise your own work well (and prioritise well).
  • You are self-reliant and stress-resistant.
  • You are motivated to take an active role in your further professional development.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer a full-time position as a doctoral fellow, consisting of an initial period of 12 months, which - after a positive evaluation, will be extended to a total maximum of 48 months.
  • Your contract is planned to start on 01/10/2025, but may be adjusted in common agreement.
  • The fellowship amount is 100% of the net salary of an AAP member in equal family circumstances. The individual fellowship amount is determined by Team Personnel Administration based on family status and seniority. A grant that meets the conditions and criteria of the regulations for doctoral fellowships is considered free of personal income tax. Click here for more information about our salary scales
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers. Click here for a complete overview of all the staff benefits.
