MTC is engaged in research and education in the fields of infection biology, cancer biology, cell biology and immunology. Within the field of tumor biology, understanding the molecular mechanisms that are deregulated during childhood tumor development has been identified as important areas of investigation to complement current research and education at the Department.  With this professorship, MTC intends to further strengthen its expertise in experimental tumor biology, promote interdisciplinary collaborations within KI, and strengthen the link between research and education.

Description of the subject area

Experimental tumor biology involves understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate tumor development and how these can be exploited for targeted therapy in pediatric cancer. This area includes the use of new methods to develop comparative experimental models, such as animal models, human cell organoids, stem cell models, and pediatric cancer samples. For incurable pediatric cancer, experimental models are necessary to develop and test new treatments. New technology such as multiomics characterization together with detailed analysis of patient material, has provided important knowledge to understand how cancer develops and how to treat cancer without harming patients and avoiding late complications. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of tumor development in children is a very important area to understand why a cell transforms into a cancer cell and to define new treatments.

Your mission

We are looking for a person who is an academic leader in experimental tumor biology and conducts high quality research and education in the field. You will mainly work with research of molecular mechanisms that regulate tumor development and how these can be used for targeted therapy in cancer. You are expected to strengthen the department's research using various experimental systems, such as animal models, organoids, stem cells, patient samples and the latest methods within these systems. A central task in this position is to strengthen the link between research and education. You are expected to develop and strengthen education and programs in tumor biology at all levels. The applicant is expected to have extensive experience in running their own research group and supervising doctoral students, as well as students at master's and bachelor's level. The tasks will be distributed with approximately 50% research in the above mentioned areas and 50% education and management assignments.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on education and research the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical skills; very good scientific skills.

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

Since the employment includes undergraduate education and examination you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (3), leadership and collaboration skills (2).

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated

•  Ongoing research activities in experimental tumor biology of high international standard, receipt of competitive external grants and awards. Your contribution must have been decisive and can be documented through first and last authorship.
• Work across different scientific disciplines with a proven ability to lead national and international research collaborations.
• Experience of teaching and pedagogical development at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as a lecturer, course organizer, study leader, examiner and program manager, and documented experience of supervision at different levels. 

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
