KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as in architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.
We are looking for a doctoral student in a project in operations management with a focus on value creation in circular material flows. The project is part of KTH's focus on circular economics, and is based on collaboration between the Industrial Management and Industrial Dynamics units at the Department of Industrial Economics and Management (INDEK). The Department of Industrial Economics and Management (INDEK) operates within the cutting field where science and technology meet management and economics. The Department accounts for the majority of KTH's education in economics, management and organization. Behind INDEK's profile is the firm belief that modern society has a strong need for highly trained engineers with expertise in which advanced technical depth is combined with good knowledge of economics and leadership.
The aim is to contribute to KTH's research through interdisciplinary research studies in collaboration between industry, government and society. Another goal of the project is to disseminate research into relevant courses and courses, thus contributing to KTH's educational offerings and quality.
Achieving the goal of a more circular economy requires multi-level research. This position will focus on strategy, configuration and coordination of return flows in material recycling by using comparative studies of different industrial systems and how the concept circular economy manifests itself in the manufacturing industry. Since there is a strong technological development in these areas, the doctoral student will work in the border between organization / management and technical development in materials science and electricity production. The research will maintain international standards and be presented at international conferences and published in internationally recognized scientific journals. As research will be carried out close to the technical processes in the companies, it is very important that the candidate understands them.
To qualify for the position, you have a M.Sc. degree, preferably with a focus on industrial economics. It is important that you have studied advanced level courses in business management (such as operational management, supply chain management). It is a pretext if you have read technical topics relevant to the project. It is also a pretext if you have experience to help in university-level courses.
You express yourself very well in Swedish and English, both in verbal and written communication, and have a good ability to critically analyze. You are independent in your work, while you have a good ability to work in a group. In order to perform good results and deliver well in your doctoral studies, we believe that your ability to reflect on your work will be crucial. It is also important that you are comfortable talking to different types of groups, when you are expected to present your research results as well as teach. Furthermore, it is of course important that you are strongly motivated to conduct research studies.
