Third-cycle subject: Solid Mechanics
We are looking for a doctoral student for the project “Multiscale modelling of ageing mechanisms in lithium-ion batteries”. Charge-discharge cycles of lithium-ion batteries induce swelling and shrinking of electrode materials, generating stresses, cracks, debonding and side reactions, causing capacity and performance loss. It aims to develop a multiscale computational-experimental framework coupling mechanical degradation and ageing across material and cell scales.
Research will be conducted with COMSOL, RISE and Volvo AB, integrating finite-element modelling and experimental validation. At KTH, the focus will be on developing physics-based models capturing mechanical degradation pathways and their influence on electrochemical performance. Experimental validation will be carried out at RISE using advanced dilatational testing, ageing studies under varied thermo-mechanical loading conditions, and post-mortem analyses.
The candidate will work closely with industrial partners and software developers, gaining experience both in fundamental research and practical application development.
The project is part of the Swedish competence centre BASE and contributes to its objectives of excellence in battery research and strengthening academia–industry collaboration.
Supervision: Professor Artem Kulachenko (main supervisor) and co-supervisors from KTH and RISE are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
Additional qualifications that are advantageous (but not mandatory):
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
Target degree: doctoral degree
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
