Third-cycle subject: Architectural and Civil Engineering
In the transition to self-sufficient low-energy buildings, knowledge of how to integrate, use, and control decentralized renewable energy sources will play a crucial role. We intend to investigate how local electricity and heat production should be integrated and controlled within buildings.
You will be part of an international and interdisciplinary research team and work within the framework of developing and applying innovative methods to streamline the supply and use of local electricity and heat production in buildings. An important part of the project is to create a deeper understanding of how this knowledge should be used to further improve the efficiency of the systems. You will conduct dynamic energy simulations for energy supply and use and test the developed methods in live-in-labs. The work is done in close collaboration with industry partners and researchers.

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge
Additional requirements:
MSc, or equivalent in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, energy engineering, control engineering
strong skills in energy system control, especially their applications in thermal and/or building HVAC sectors
good skills and proficiency in the use of current state-of-the-art machine learning frameworks, such as Python, Tensorflow, scikit-learn, etc., for developing ML applications
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
independently drive their work forward and manage projects
have a professional approach and
analyze and work with complex issues and ability to absorb new knowledge and use it in research, in addition
knowledge of modeling of both heating and electrical systems in buildings or similar is required
good communication skills and good knowledge of both written and spoken English as required in the daily work. Proficiency in both spoken and written Swedish is desirable for the same reasons.
easy to collaborate and work in an international environment with both industry and academic partners
experience working in energy simulation environments, e.g., Trnsys, Dymola, Modelica, etc. is a strong plus
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.

Information regarding admission and employment
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
