KU Leuven is a research-intensive, internationally oriented university that conducts both fundamental and applied scientific research. It has a strong inter- and multidisciplinary focus and strives for international excellence. The Faculty and research units actively collaborate with research partners both nationally and internationally.

The Faculty of Law and Criminology within the Humanities and Social Sciences Group at KU Leuven has a part-time vacancy for a position as a visiting professor for the course “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Technologies” (10%).

The Faculty of Law and Criminology has a strong national and international reputation in education, research, and service within the broad domain of law and technology. It strives for leadership in each of these areas at the national, European, and international levels. The Faculty aims to distinguish itself through the academic nature of its work and an awareness of the significant societal role of this field. Therefore, the technical nature of the legal domain must be transcended with originality in research, attention to values, awareness of the interaction of legal rules within a multi-layered legal order, and both intra- and interdisciplinarity.

Responsibilities

The assignment involves teaching the course “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Technologies” (in English, as part of the Advanced Master in Intellectual Property & ICT Law, campus Brussels). This course provides students with an overview of the key elements of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Topics covered include the history and definitions of AI, machine learning and its various approaches (e.g. neural networks and deep learning), Bayesian and symbolic AI. The course also addresses supervised and unsupervised learning, the crucial role of datasets and concludes with a forward-looking discussion on the future of AI. Students will also participate in practical exercises, such as building simple machine-learning-based tools to recognise patterns in data. Additionally, the teaching assignment includes supervising a limited number of master's theses within the Advanced Master in Intellectual Property & ICT Law.
The teaching must meet the academic standards in terms of level, orientation, and scholarly content. It aligns with KU Leuven’s educational vision, particularly its research-based and research-oriented approach. Commitment to the overall quality of the programme is considered self-evident.

Profile

You have obtained a PhD and have directly relevant (practical) experience in law and technology, particularly regarding the technical aspects of artificial intelligence. Your research and practical experience demonstrate originality, abstract thinking, and openness.
You have a strong vision and the ability to provide high-quality, research-based academic education, along with excellent teaching skills. Teaching experience is an asset.
You possess demonstrable organisational, social, and professional skills, as well as leadership capabilities that enable you to work collegially and flexibly within a team.
A very good command of English and Dutch is required (as you will be involved in the working of CiTiP as well).

Offer

We offer a part-time position (10%) in an intellectually challenging environment.
You will be appointed as a visiting professor for a period of 1 year, subsequently extendable per 5 years. The appointment starts on 1 September 2025.
