The Mathematical Institute (MI) of Leiden University and the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) are looking for a

PhD Candidate in Random Graphs and Complex Networks

to commence at the earliest possible date and no later than September 2025. The project focuses on establishing rigorous mathematical results for random (geometric) graphs, as well as on modeling realistic real-world networks with different structural properties. During the PhD, the successful candidate will work on several subprojects and analyse random graph models and complex networks by probabilistic tools, followed by empirical studies and validation of the models.

Aspects of interest include, but are not limited to, higher-order network structures, random processes on random (geometric) graphs and random graphs embedded in spaces with constant curvature. The position will be co-supervised by dr. Moritz Otto (MI) and by dr. Akrati Saxena (LIACS). Academic excellence is the main selection criterion.

  • A university degree* in mathematics or computer science (with a strong mathematical focus) with above average grades
  • Advanced knowledge in probability; expertise in random graphs, complex networks, hyperbolic geometry or topological data analysis is a plus
  • Strong programming skills in Python (please mention your level of proficiency and knowledge of other programming languages in your CV and motivation letter)
  • Extraordinary motivation for scientific work
  • Good English communication skills
  • The ability to work independently and in a team

*Candidates not (yet) past the master’s phase are also invited to apply, assuming they will graduate in summer 2025.

The Mathematical Institute has four research themes: Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory; Analysis and Dynamical Systems; Probability Theory; and Statistics and Data Science.

Terms and conditions

  • We offer a full-time appointment of initially one year. After a positive evaluation of the progress of the research, teaching evaluations, personal capabilities and compatibility, the appointment will be extended for another three years.
  • The gross salary ranges from € 2.901 per month in the first year to € 3.707 gross per month in the fourth year based on a full-time position (pay scale P).
  • Additional funding is available to support travel to conferences and workshops abroad.
  • Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package including pension build-up, paid parental leave and additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses (8.3%).
  • Our individual choices model gives you some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.   • All our PhD candidates are embedded in the Leiden University Graduate School of Science.
