About Centre for Urban Systems (CUS) :

The CUS is a center dedicated to research, education, and innovation in the field of urban sciences. It uses Living Labs as a research and training environment to develop future urban leaders and to identify innovative solutions to complex urban challenges. CUS focuses on four pillars: research, education, expertise, and innovation, all aimed at improving urban management and citizens’ well-being.

Job Description

The Postdoctoral Researcher will contribute to the development of innovative research at the intersection of hydrology, artificial intelligence, and urban systems. The position is aligned with the mission of the Center for Urban Systems (CUS), which promotes resilience, sustainability, and performance in urban and territorial systems.

The researcher will focus on the design and application of hydrological, and AI-based modelling approaches to address water-related challenges in urban environments. This includes improving the understanding, prediction, and management of hydrological processes under the pressures of climate variability, urbanization, and increasing water demand.

The role involves the integration of hydroclimatic, geospatial, and remote sensing data to support decision-making, strengthen urban water resilience, and contribute to sustainable water resources management. The selected candidate will also participate in interdisciplinary research activities, scientific publication, and project development.

Main Responsibilities

  • Conduct advanced research in AI-based modelling applied to urban water systems.
  • Develop models, and predictive tools for hydrological analysis and urban water management.
  • Design analytical approaches to improve water resources management and urban resilience.
  • Analyze hydrological processes in relation to climate variability, urban growth, and environmental pressures Integrate hydrological, climatic, geospatial, and remote sensing datasets for modelling purposes.
  • Produce high-quality scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and present research results at international conferences.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary research projects within the CUS related to urban sustainability, environmental monitoring, and urban resilience.

Key Duties

  • Design and implement machine learning and deep learning models for hydrological applications.
  • Assess issues related to water availability.
  • Support the development of decision-support tools for resilient and sustainable urban water management.
  • Process, analyze, and interpret environmental and spatial datasets.
  • Write and publish scientific articles and reference documents that support the dissemination and valorization of research results.
  • Collaborate with academic partners, public institutions, and urban stakeholders to support sustainable urban planning strategies.
  • Contribute to the preparation of research proposals and respond to national and international research funding calls.

REQUIRED PROFILE

  • PhD in Hydrology, Environmental Science, Remote Sensing, Data Science, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong background in hydrological modelling, time-series analysis, and environmental data analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience in artificial intelligence, including machine learning and deep learning, applied to hydrological or water-related systems.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and relevant libraries for data analysis and modelling (e.g., TensorFlow, Keras, Scikit-learn, Pandas); knowledge of R would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with geospatial data, GIS, remote sensing products, and analysis methods.
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research and work effectively within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in English and French, both written and spoken

SKILLS AND QUALITIES

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to handle large and heterogeneous datasets.
  • Capacity to link technical modelling work with applied urban and environmental challenges.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex results clearly to both scientific and non-scientific audiences.
  • Team spirit, autonomy, and initiative Interest in resilience, sustainability, and innovation in urban systems
