We are looking for a postdoc researcher for a 2-year position. The role involves developing remote sensing-based tools and methods for carbon and biodiversity monitoring as well as developing greenhouse gas inventory methods using remote sensing tools.

The main responsibilities of the postdoctoral research scientist focus on remote sensing of forests, peatlands and built environments. The objectives include developing remote sensing-based tools and methods for carbon and biodiversity monitoring and apply these tools also in National Greenhouse Gas Inventory. Key tasks involve processing and analyzing diverse data sources, including satellite, LiDAR, drone imagery, and field inventory data. Responsibilities may also include conducting drone flights, performing fieldwork, and other supporting tasks. Additionally, the role involves project management, reporting, and contributing to research funding applications. Tasks can be tailored to align with your skills and interests.

The postdoctoral researcher will work in Ecosystem and Modeling (ESMA) group (50%) and Carbon cycle management (HIHA) group (50%). Good command of Finnish is a prerequisite in National Greenhouse Gas Inventory, but English is also required since both groups are involved in several EU Horizon projects and maintain strong ties within the European research community.

Our expectations of the applicant

To succeed in this role, you should have expertise in managing large spatial datasets on forests, peatlands and built environments. You should also have solid knowledge of remote sensing data and tools (incl. geospatial data) and strong skills in statistical modeling methods.

We also expect you to have
- A PhD degree in a relevant field (e.g., forestry, physical geography, environmental science, statistics, machine learning, or a related area. PhD completed max. 5 years ago)
- proficiency with computing and good software skills (e.g., R, Python, ArcGIS, QGIS)
- Interest in understanding forest and peatland biodiversity as well as greenhouse gas inventory
- Good command of Finnish as well as English
- Good interpersonal skills in combination with an independent and self-initiative approach to work

We offer youThe well-being of our people and a positive approach towards innovation and development are particularly important to us. Our mobile work model allows you to work in Finland in the location most appropriate for your work. In addition, we provide flexible hours, and as your employment with us continues, long vacations. We offer lunch benefits, as well as sports, culture, or commuting support.
