The Faculty of Built Environment (BEN) at Tampere University focuses on high-level scientific and applied research in architecture and civil engineering, as well as education related to these fields.  

The faculty forms a unique interaction and innovation environment, offering opportunities for multidisciplinary education and research initiatives in the built environment. Our goal is to be a national leader in built environment research and education, and to be an internationally visible and respected actor and partner in our areas of strength. The faculty's research covers various aspects of the built environment, and research groups collaborate both nationally and internationally. 

The Faculty of Built Environment consists of two units: architecture and civil engineering. The faculty's facilities on the Hervanta campus house a unique research infrastructure: it consists of several research infrastructures, with the heart being a construction hall of over 2,000 square meters. This hall is the only one of its kind in Finland and offers several laboratory spaces with equipment for studying various structures.  

We are looking for a Staff Scientist to lead the development and daily activities of our laboratories. The aim is to strengthen the required expertise in developing and keeping up these unique research facilities. 

Job description 

Staff Scientists are academic personnel who are responsible for specialist activities related to research, providing support to teaching and research staff. The responsibilities of Staff Scientists involve the development and use of research infrastructures and specialist research equipment. Their individual job descriptions are defined in relation to the University’s strategic needs and include teaching, research and the provision of services. 

The diverse operations of our infrastructure at Tampere University require a devoted Staff Scientist to run day-to-day operations on-site, and to represent the infrastructures while interacting with research communities and university management. 

The primary duties of the Staff Scientist are: 

  • Broad responsibility for developing and maintaining the research infrastructure of the Faculty of Built Environment 
  • Organizes and manages the day-to-day operations of the research infrastructure 
  • Collaboration with support services related to the research infrastructure 
  • Expanding the use of research infrastructure and managing its utilization 
  • Participation in the university's network of infrastructure experts and supporting research groups in utilizing infrastructures. 
  • Development of research infrastructure from the perspectives of university and user needs, and acquisition of funding for this purpose 
  • Monitors emerging technologies and research trends to plan infrastructure development and ensure it remains up-to-date 
  • Supports research groups in preparing applications related to research infrastructure 
  • Promotes scientific work and publication activities of research groups utilizing infrastructures 
  • In relation to role responsible for occupational safety and developing a safety culture. 
  • Promotes the research infrastructure and markets related services within the university and externally 
  • International collaboration 
  • Maintains the relationship with other relevant infrastructure facilities not only in Tampere university but also in other research centers in Finland and in Europe.

Requirements 

This position requires the following experience and expertise: 

  • An applicable doctoral degree. We welcome diverse academic backgrounds, including but not limited to Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science 
  • Demonstrated strong motivation and deep interest in the tasks outlined in the job description 
  • Extensive experience and strong practical skills in experimental research or structural testing 
  • Motivation and ability to actively tune research facilities and equipment to meet various needs in the research laboratory 
  • Good social interaction skills 
  • Good scientific, presentation and communication skills in Finnish and English 
  • Experience in managing research projects and establishing research infrastructure facilities

We offer 

Civil Engineering unit at Tampere University has a unique research infrastructure: it consists of five research laboratories, with the heart being a construction hall of over 2,000 square meters. We offer the ability to work with several laboratory spaces with equipment for studying various structures with world-renowned scholars, an extensive network of societal and industrial collaboration partners. Tampere University also offers great opportunities for researchers to develop their careers in an international setting. 

The position will be filled on a permanent basis. The appointment is expected to commence as soon as possible, as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all new employees. 

The salary will be based on the job demand and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of Staff Scientist is placed on the job demand level 6. The minimum starting salary will range between 4400 - 4700 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed depending upon experience and/or performance.
