Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

The research group of Electromechanics at the Electrical Engineering Unit at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University focuses on numerical electromagnetics and magnetic materials. We work at the interface of electromagnetic theory, computational science, physics of magnetic materials and electrical engineering applications of practical importance. Our vision is to integrate advanced electromagnetic modeling tools together with practical design of electromagnetic energy conversion devices, such as electrical machines, transformers, inductors and energy harvesters.

We are part of a Research Council of Finland Centre of Excellence on “High-Speed Electromechanical Energy Conversion Systems” which aims at the development of next generation high-speed electrical machines for energy conversion and transport applications. Our part is related to the development of numerical modeling techniques for the high-frequency behavior of electrical machine windings. We are also running a 5-year European Research Council funded project “Controllable Magnetic Cores for Transformers and Electrical Machines” related to real-time control of magnetic flux paths in electromagnetic devices. Both projects rely heavily on numerical modeling of magnetic fields in different applications using in-house computational codes.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are now looking for a Research Assistant to explore means of applying AI agents in our ongoing research. The objective is to identify and evaluate promising applications of AI agents in computational electromagnetics and related software development. The exact topic will be decided based on the background and interests of the selected candidate. The work may involve, for example,

  • development of AI agents for integration and maintenance of computational codes written in different languages (in particular MATLAB, Python and Fortran)
  • development of AI agent-based workflows for verification, validation and benchmarking computational electromagnetics software
  • development of AI agents for automated implementation of computational electromagnetics algorithms based on scientific literature

The topics may also be suitable for B.Sc. or M.Sc. theses.

REQUIREMENTS

A successful candidate has a B.Sc. or M.Sc. study right in a Finnish university, an excellent study record in a relevant engineering field, experience in programming and interest in applying AI tools in electromagnetic modeling. In particular, experience with or interest in some of the following are appreciated:

  • programming in MATLAB, Python or Fortran
  • scientific computing, e.g., the finite element method
  • dynamic electromagnetics, electrical machines and transformers
  • open-weight AI models, local AI deployment tools (e.g. Ollama, OpenCode) and agentic AI workflows
  • customizing large language models

They can also demonstrate high-quality writing and reporting skills. The position requires good English language skills.

WE OFFER

We can offer a part-time contract for a B.Sc. or M.Sc. student or a full-time contract for a master’s thesis worker. The starting date and the exact allocation (full-time or part-time) will be mutually agreed before the start of employment. The position will be filled for a fixed-term period until May 9th, 2027 with a possibility for extension. A trial period of 3,5 months is applied.

The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. The position of Research Assistant is placed on the job demand level 1 (the demand level chart for the teaching and research staff). In addition, employees will receive performance-based salary which for Research Assistants is based on their study credits. Full-time salary for a Research Assistant is around € 2200–2600 per month depending on completed study credits.

Tampere University offers many benefits to its employees, e.g. occupational health services, flexible working hours, high-quality sport services and affordable lunch opportunities on campus. Tampere region is one of the fastest growing city areas in Finland. Tampere is the largest inland city in the Nordic countries and a traditional centre of the Finnish industry. Today, the city is best known for its high-tech expertise and extensive know-how in various fields. Tampere is also the most popular city in Finland for higher education studies.

HOW TO APPLY

Please submit your application through our online recruitment system (link below). The closing date for applications is September 7th, 2026 (at 23:59, EEST / UTC +3). Applications and all accompanying documentation must be in English.

The following documents should accompany your application:

  • a CV (with a list of publications if applicable)
  • a free-form application letter (max. 1 page)
  • transcript of records
  • other relevant documents that support your application (e.g. B.Sc. thesis, course assignment reports (max. 2), etc.)
