The Faculty of Psychology, Educational Sciences, and Speech Therapy is opening a full-time academic position in the field of Educational Sciences. The selected candidate will be affiliated with the Educational Sciences Department and will be primarily attached to the Center for Research in Educational Sciences. They will also contribute to the work of the Pôle Education de l'ULB and collaborate with partner Higher Education Institutions involved in teacher training (HE Brussels-Brabant, HE Francisco Ferrer, HE Lucia de Brouckère). The teaching responsibilities will encompass both the Educational Sciences program within the Faculty and the initial teacher training program for sections 1, 2, and 3, coordinated by the Pôle Éducation.
Research Area
Applicants must demonstrate significant research experience in Educational Sciences, broadly defined as a field fostering dialogue between diverse disciplinary and epistemological perspectives on education. In connection with the courses to be taught, the selected academic is expected to develop critical research on active pedagogies, examining their historical development, contemporary relevance, and interactions with other pedagogical approaches. Several orientations are possible (non-exclusively), including the role and impact of active pedagogies in contemporary education, their comparison with other teaching models (instructionist, lecture-based, etc.), or their engagement with broader educational issues such as knowledge-based emancipation and social inequalities.
Educational Objectives
The French-speaking Community of Belgium (FW-B) is currently undergoing several major educational reforms as part of the Pact for Excellence in Education, including the implementation of a core curriculum, initial and continuous teacher training, and school governance changes. These reforms aim to transform teaching practices and the teaching profession itself. The selected candidate will contribute to the pedagogical training of students in Educational Sciences and pre-service teachers (sections 1, 2, and 3). Additionally, they will play a role in training students in research methodologies at the master’s level, both in Educational Sciences and in initial teacher training programs.
Teaching Responsibilities
Starting from the 2025 academic year, the appointed candidate will be responsible for the following courses:
• A teaching unit within the first-year Bachelor’s program in Psychology, Educational Sciences, and Speech Therapy, as part of EDUC-E101: Major Trends in Educational Thought and Research (initially 18 hours of lectures, increasing to full responsibility—36 hours—from 2026);
• A third-year Bachelor’s course related to the professional practice of pre-service teachers in the initial teacher training program (sections 1, 2, and 3), comprising 16 hours of lectures to be delivered across three partner institutions (Brussels, Jodoigne, Nivelles);
• A newly developed course in the complementary track of the Master’s program in Educational Sciences, titled Active Pedagogies: Foundations, Issues, and Controversies (36 hours of lectures).
From the 2026 academic year onward, the teaching load will be expanded to include another newly developed course in the Master’s program (sections 1, 2, and 3) of the RFIE, focusing on Major Pedagogical Theories. This teaching workload may change over the course of your career. The selected candidate will also be expected to supervise a substantial number of Master’s theses from the outset. Additionally, they will represent the Department/ULB in committees at both the internal and external levels when expertise in Educational Sciences is required. Active participation in community service will also be expected.
Required Qualifications
• A PhD in Educational Sciences or another relevant discipline (such as Didactics, Sociology, History, Philosophy, or Psychology). In the latter case, the candidate’s dissertation or research publications must explicitly demonstrate a connection with Educational Sciences.
Required Experience and Skills
• A minimum of four years of research experience at the time of appointment.
• A strong research record in the relevant field, with international recognition demonstrated through collaborations, editorial responsibilities, membership in scholarly societies, and/or academic mobility outside the institution where the PhD was completed (either during or after the doctoral period).
• In-depth knowledge of the educational system in the French-speaking Community of Belgium (FW-B) and the context of teacher training.
• Excellent command of the language of instruction (courses must be taught in French starting from the 2025 academic year).
• Experience in teacher training is considered an asset.
