The Pathology department and the Center for Oncologic Research are diagnostic and research institutes within the Antwerp University Hospital and the University of Antwerp, comprising over 50 scientists with a main goal to advance cancer treatment and to improve patient quality of life through development of more efficient cancer detection methods and revolutionary therapies. The center is looking for A PhD for the project “Intraoperative assessment of resection margins in breast cancer surgery by Raman spectroscopy - BE‐RIGHT”
Position
You will perform research in the field of pathology and breast cancer detection. This project aims to develop and validate a protocol for intraoperative assessment of resection margins in breast cancer surgery, based on a novel Raman spectroscopic technology (IOARM-Raman) that will fit in the surgical work flow. To determine the potential improvement of resection margin status in breast cancer surgery, an observational study comparing IOARM-Raman to local standard-of-care surgical procedures will be executed.
This project is multi-disciplinary. It involves the Center for Oncologic researchers based at University of Antwerp, and the departments of Pathology and Breast surgery based at the Antwerp University Hospital. You will perform your daily work within the Pathology department in close collaboration with the breast cancer surgical team and engineers.
