Let’s shape the future - University of Antwerp

The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking, European university. We offer an innovative academic education to more than 20000 students, conduct pioneering scientific research and play an important service-providing role in society. We are one of the largest, most international and most innovative employers in the region. With more than 6000 employees from 100 different countries, we are helping to build tomorrow's world every day. Through top scientific research, we push back boundaries and set a course for the future – a future that you can help to shape.

We are seeking for a motivated and talented PhD student to develop model-based reconstruction methods for quantitative super-resolution perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Specifically, you will develop model-based image reconstruction methods for quantitative arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI images. ASL is a promising, non-invasive perfusion magnetic resonance imaging technique for quantifying cerebral blood flow (CBF). Unfortunately, ASL suffers from an inherently low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and spatial resolution, undermining its potential. Increasing spatial resolution without significantly sacrificing SNR or scan time represents a critical challenge towards routine (pre)clinical use. In this PhD research, you will develop model-based super-resolution reconstruction methods for accelerated and quantitative high-resolution ASL MRI, thereby breaking the traditional SNR/resolution/scan-time trade-off. Alongside purely physics-based models, you will explore physics-informed deep learning approaches.

Relevant literature:

This research builds on strong collaborations and complementary expertise between the imec-Vision Lab (image reconstruction, processing, and analysis), the Bio-Imaging Lab (preclinical neuro-MRI of small laboratory animals). These teams are founding partners of the µNEURO Research Centre of Excellence and bring extensive experience from their pioneering work in these fields (more info).

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of quantitative arterial spin labelling (ASL) MRI.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project, and present your work through posters and presentations at (inter)national conferences.
  • You will be embedded in two research teams (imec-Vision Lab and Bio-Imaging Lab), offering complementary expertise in a stimulating multidisciplinary environment with state-of-the-art computing and imaging infrastructure.

Profile

  • You hold a Master’s degree in biomedical engineering, physics, or related field.
  • You are passionate about computational imaging.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • You can speak and write fluently in English and love to present your work.
  • A background in magnetic resonance imaging is highly appreciated.
  • You are proficient in at least one programming language (e.g., python).

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of four years (provided a positive evaluation after 1 and 2 years).
  • The planned start date is September 1, 2025 (can be discussed)
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders.
  • You will work in a stimulating, multidisciplinary consortium for high-level neuroscience research, with state-of-the-art computing and imaging infrastructure.
