The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focuses on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment. We are responsible for postgraduate education in the subject area Natural Sciences with a focus on chemistry, biophysics, biology and educational science. In addition, the department hosts educational programs in molecular biology, genomics and systems biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry, as well as prescription education. The department is an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and education and contributes strongly to the University of Gothenburg's top ranking in life science. We are located in central premises at Natrium, Medicinareberget, Gothenburg.

Tietze lab is a part of the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (https://www.gu.se/en/molecular-translational-medicine) which conducts basic and clinical research in the fields of metabolism, neuroscience, cancer, inflammation, degenerative diseases, genomics and life science chemistry and composed of 32 research teams on Göteborg’s side which research is focused on important questions in medicine with a special interest in translation molecular medicine. Tietze lab (www.tietze-lab.com) focuses on bioinspired chemical engineering of peptide-based molecules/ materials towards diagnostics and drug delivery. Her research team develops novel approaches to provide access to highly hydrophobic peptides/peptide mimetics, i.e. transmembrane peptides/proteins and venom-derived cysteine-rich peptides. Her lab develops novel conjugation methods, explore SAR properties of novel bioactive peptides, and engineer peptide-based nanosensors.

Duties

Project

We are seeking a motivated and talented scientist to join our interdisciplinary biosensor development team. Here, you will commit to the development of novel biosensors by using tailormade, microfluidic nanopore-based sensing systems.

What you’ll do

You will work hand in hand with our synthesis and material specialists, working on system integration and data analysis of novel biosensors. Apart from the analysis of large datasets, you will work on the development, optimization and implementation of instrument communication and automatization within our biosensor measurement platform. Additionally, you will be engaged in designing novel sensor units and developing surface modification/functionalization techniques. The candidate will be part of the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine in Gothenburg (https://www.gu.se/en/molecular-translational-medicine) and will benefit from the well-established network within the Region Västra Götaland and Sweden. This position is funded by a prestigious Proof of Concept WALP KAW grant.

Job assignments

The candidate will work on the system integration of multiple sensors within a microfluid set-up. Will develop and establish routine experimental workflows using the microfluidic set-up to enable high throughput sample measurements. Additionally, the candidate will optimize data analysis and downstream workflows

Qualifications

Required education, knowledge and experience, personal qualities

We are looking for a candidate with

  • a proven expertise in system integration, data science, material science or related fields, and has a strong track record in those fields
  • extensive practical knowledge of system engineering, integration and data analysis
  • extensive practical knowledge in nanopore analysis/ analyte detection as well as material characterization techniques of such systems
  • proven experience in machine learning or similar
  • understanding of data structures, data modeling and software architecture
  • deep knowledge of math, probability, statistics and algorithms
  • ability to write robust code in Python
  • familiarity with machine learning frameworks (like Keras or PyTorch) and libraries : scikit-learn
  • great initiative and willingness to implement new ideas and approaches, but also strong problem-solving capabilities.
  • experience in presenting scientific findings in writing, presentations, and networking activities with the ability to communicate and write proficiently in English. Furthermore, the applicant must be responsible, and committed, be able to work independently, and collaborate with scientists from other disciplines in lab and team environments

Merit education, knowledge and experience, personal qualities

The successful applicant is expected to plan, execute and analyse experiments in an independent manner and to actively contribute scientifically to the group.
