About the SnT...

SnT is a leading international research and innovation centre in secure, reliable and trustworthy ICT systems and services. We play an instrumental role in Luxembourg by fueling innovation through research partnerships with industry, boosting R&D investments leading to economic growth, and attracting highly qualified talent.

The University of Luxembourg seeks to hire a highly motivated and outstanding researcher in the area of Optical communication at its Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability, and Trust (SnT). SnT is a centre carrying out interdisciplinary research in secure, reliable and trustworthy ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) systems and services. SnT is active in several international research projects funded by the European Space Agency and the EU7th framework program. For further information, you may check: www.securityandtrust.lu, and https://www.uni.lu/snt-en/research-groups/SIGCOM/

The Centre is rapidly expanding its research activities and is seeking a highly motivated Researcher who wishes to contribute to its partnership and research projects. The successful candidate will perform theoretical and experimental research on Optical Systems applied for future communication, imaging, and radar systems.

We're looking for people driven by excellence, excited about innovation, and looking to make a difference. If this sounds like you, you've come to the right place!

Your Role...

The successful candidate will join a strong and motivated research team led by Prof. Symeon Chatzinotas to work on one or more of the following areas:

  • Research on Optical communication particularly:
    • Free space optics (Horizontal and slant path)
    • Intersatellite communication
    • Optical feeder links
    • Visible light communication.
    • Underwater optical communication
    • Optical camera communication
  • Optical beam generation
  • Internet-of-Things
  • Optical networks
  • Vehicular communication

The position holder will be required to perform the following tasks:

  • Integrate with the SIGCOM research group and contribute to the SIGCOM on-going research projects related to optical communications
  • Develop research around optical-based communications, including channel modeling, optimization of transmission and reception, network-based design, and evaluation
  • Design and develop algorithms able to provide a good performance-complexity trade-off for the identified scenarios and use cases
  • Compare with state-of-the-art and conventional solutions via numerical simulations and/or HW/chipset validation
  • Disseminating results through scientific publications and conferences
  • Assisting in the organization of relevant workshops and demos
  • Preparing new research proposals to attract new projects

  • A solid mathematical background
  • Active and passive optical components(MUX/DEMUX, Switches, transceivers, SFPs, combiner, etc.)
  • Experience with optical lab equipment(lens, collimator, beam profiler, CCD camera, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Adaptive optics and optical channel modeling
  • Software Development using C++, Python, MATLAB
  • Experience with 5G/6G communication systems is desirable
  • Experience with non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) is considered a plus but it is not required
  • International experience is desirable
  • Sound publication track record in relevant international conferences and top journals (at least one IEEE Transaction publication is mandatory)
  • Experience of working with industrial projects or public funded research projects is highly desirable
