The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 4000 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 19,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations. The University of Oulu is ranked in the top 3% of the world’s universities.

We are now looking for a

Two Doctoral Researchers

to join us in the Materials and Mechanical Engineering Research Unit, University of Oulu.

Position is fixed-term for 3,5 years, and focuses on the project NewGenH2Steel.

About us

Materials and Mechanical Engineering Research Unit, University of Oulu, is a world-leading research unit in the field of physical and mechanical metallurgy of advanced high-strength steels, with a focus on improving the efficiency and sustainability of structures, vehicles, and modern machines. We strive to provide innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges and to contribute to the development of modern structures and mobile machinery that are both environmentally friendly and cost-effective.

About the job

The project aims to explore innovative high-risk/high-gain ideas to develop new-generation hydrogen-resistant steels. The Doctoral researchers will work on developing sustainable ultrahigh-strength steels with an exceptional property combination through novel science-based approaches. Project findings could have a notable impact on the deployment of green hydrogen infrastructure, as needed to achieve net-zero carbon ambitions.
The doctoral researcher will be integrated into the Steel Fatigue Research Group and will have the opportunity to interact on a daily basis with other doctoral and postdoctoral researchers working on various field/research topic with diverse expertise.

Selected candidates will receive comprehensive training in the characterization of advanced high-strength steels, including micromechanical property evaluation under static and cyclic loading conditions. They will also gain hands-on experience in physical simulation using state-of-the-art facilities, as well as CALPHAD-based thermodynamic and numerical modelling to investigate and correlate structure–property relationships. The position provides a unique opportunity to collaborate with various research groups at the University of Oulu and international partners in pursuing shared research objectives. Overall, this role is ideal for individuals seeking to deepen their expertise through innovative research aimed at developing sustainable, high-performance steels for a carbon-neutral society.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting original research aimed at designing multiphase metastable structures through swift processing.
  • Analyze experimental data to gain insights into the mechanisms governing hydrogen embrittlement resistance.
  • Applying modeling techniques to simulate microstructural evolution and predict the effect of processing parameters on material properties.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of researchers and engineers to design and execute experimental studies to validate modeling predictions.
  • Present research findings at conferences, publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, and contribute to the dissemination of knowledge within the scientific community.
  • Work closely with industry partners to ensure the relevance and applicability of research outcomes to real-world engineering challenges.

What we offer

  • The support of an experienced and enthusiastic team, with whom you can share your expertise and grow as an expert.
  • Wellness benefit ePassi covering sport, culture, and well-being. Read more about other staff benefits.
  • Development and career options of the big organization.
  • Work that matters and a workplace that promotes flexibility and work-life balance. Read more about working with us.
  • Our Buddy Programme and Spouse Network support you and your close ones in settling into Oulu.
  • We have an HR Excellence in Research quality label, which is a recognition awarded by the European Commission for the development of researchers’ working conditions and careers.
  • Finland is one of the most livable countries in the world, with a high quality of life, safety, an excellent education system, and a competitive economy. Read more about living in Oulu.

Who are you?

In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we require from you:

  •  A master's degree in a relevant field (Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Physics, etc.).
  • A transdisciplinary research orientation with demonstrated research experience or interest.
  • Capacity to collaborate in research and research dissemination activities.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills in English.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Motivated and self-driven with a passion for scientific research and innovation.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

The candidates will be evaluated based on their qualifications, suitability for the research topics, and potential as researchers. The following merits are seen as strong advantages:

  • Strong background in process design, physical and mechanical metallurgy of steel, and materials characterization.
  • Experience with atomic-scale investigation and in situ synchrotron data analysis.
  •  Familiarity with static/dynamic property characterizations.
  • A deep understanding of the work-hardening mechanisms operative during mechanical testing.
  • Experience with finite element simulation with COMSOL Multiphysics and Abaqus.
  • Experience with CALPHAD thermodynamic/diffusion models and/or phase field simulations.

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 3,5 years, starting on 01.09.2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The starting salary will be based on levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approx. 2800-3200 € per month (before taxes).  A trial period of 6 months is applied to the position.
