Assistant Professor in Biophysical, Biochemical Sciences and/or Biomedical Engineering

The Department of Molecular Medicine invites applications for a tenure-track position as assistant professor in Biophysical, Biochemical Sciences and/or Biomedical Engineering in the Center for Single Particle Science and Engineering.

The Center for Single Particle Science and Engineering was established in 2013 by a Danish National Research Foundation-Niels Bohr Professorship award to David Needham PhD, DSc (Nottingham) as a new and unique center for research and teaching at SDU. It principally uses Micropipet Manipulation techniques and associated analyses to study biological, physico-chemical, materials, and technological phenomena as single and pairs of micro-particles. Studies include all three states of matter as gas, liquid and solid microparticles and interfaces, as well as biological cells, and its adaptation for single molecule studies (as the Bio-interface Probe). These techniques have generated new knowledge in cell, membrane, and molecular biology/biophysics; physical chemistry of interfacial tension and solvent dissolution, micro-scale material science and engineering of the microglassification of proteins, precipitation of polymers, and crystallization of salts and other materials (see for some SPSE publications). The Bohr Professorship has thus brought new knowledge into mainstream research, development, commercialization, and education, impacting at least the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, pharmacy, food/nutrition, biotechnology, and nano-science and engineering, as well as new collaborations with industry.

With the Professorship ending its 5-year term December 31 2017, we are now looking for a highly motivated and scientifically accomplished scientist-researcher-educator at the Assistant Professor level who can help to embed the Center for Single Particle Science and Engineering, while developing their own independent and funded research program.

Research profile and tasks

The main task for the appointed assistant professor will be to develop and eventually lead a group that can strengthen biomedical and experimental research in a range of fields (as above) at the University of Southern Denmark. A rapidly building publication record and some evidence of an ability to raise external research funding is required.

Applicants with research interests that complement the on-going research within the Center (as presented above) will be preferred. The candidate will be expected to continue one or more aspects of the work of the center and develop their own fully-funded independent research program focused on the flagship techniques of the center, micropipette manipulation. Ideally, the successful candidate will incorporate micropipette manipulation into their research activities, used and applied in some specific way. The teaching commitment will be in Molecular Medicine as specified below. The candidate must be able to supervise and support medical and PhD research students.

A profile where both fundamental and translational research is part of the portfolio will be preferred. Building on the current Center activities, close collaborations with natural and health sciences and engineering will be expected, including research groups at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, which are leaders in proteomics, organic chemistry and membrane biophysics; collaboration with other groups within the Institute of Molecular Medicine will likewise be encouraged; as will projects with the school of Technology, Engineering.

Research Qualifications

The successful candidate holds qualifications, including a PhD or equivalent in physical, chemical and/or biophysical sciences or biomedical engineering and has at least some experience in the techniques of micropipette manipulation supported by light microscopy.

The successful candidate must

  • hold qualifications, including a PhD or equivalent in physical, chemical, biophysical sciences and/or Biomedical engineering,
  • have proven postdoctoral training,
  • have some experience in teaching subjects including fundamental physical, chemical, biophysical sciences and/or Biomedical engineering
  • have supervising- or co-supervising experience training and graduating PhD research students
  • have already shown the ability to acquire some independent research funding
  • have at least some expertise in micropipette manipulation and optical microscopy
  • and have begun to demonstrate significant research impact through peer-reviewed publications.

Teaching commitments

Because of the fundamental nature of this position, the teaching commitments at the Faculty of Health Sciences and at the Department of Molecular Medicine will be in how such physico-chemical fundamentals are applied and inform the more biological biomedical and clinical subjects in the faculty's and university's curriculum. These would include, biophysics, biomedicine, cancer biology, immunology, physiology, pharmacology, and biochemistry. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching of medical and natural science students at the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Natural Sciences in a limited number of hours. The candidate will be expected to mentor graduate and PhD students, pursuing their Master’s degree and PhD.

Teaching qualifications

Potential candidates will be expected to possess teaching qualifications corresponding to those obtained as senior-level post doc or assistant professor having perhaps already offered, taught, and established their own courses as Principle Instructor or co-taught courses; and to be able to develop and offer new courses that enhance the educational experience of our undergraduate, graduate, and medical students.

Application, salary and terms of appointment

Further information can be obtained from Professor David Needham, Telephone  (+45) 51 70 13 17, E-mail: or Professor Uffe Holmskov, Department of Molecular Medicine, +45 6550 3772 E-mail

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

If the successful applicant has no documented teaching experience corresponding to assistant professor level, the applicant will be engaged on a trial basis for the first 18 months.

Application and assessment

Applications will be assessed by an expert committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the university.

Only applications written in English will be accepted for evaluation.

Applications – including the required attachments – must be sent via the below-mentioned link “Apply online". Only online applications will be accepted. Attached files must be Adobe PDF or Word format. Each field in the application form can contain up to max. 10 Mb.

The application must contain (as pdf.- or docx.-files):

- A detailed CV
- A complete and numbered list of peer reviewed publications including a citation analyses and h index
- Up to 5 publications considered as the most important for this application
- A teaching or Teaching Assistant portfolio including synopses of any courses taught at undergraduate and graduate levels (as Principle Instructor or Co-Instructor)
- A list of any research supervised or co-supervised at the undergraduate (e.g., single-semester research project), MS and PhD graduate, (including graduated PhD Thesis titles), and post doc-level research projects.
- A short but detailed Research Plan in the field of expertise of the candidate including: a brief literature review that establishes the observations that drive the study; a series of specific aims that test mechanistic hypotheses; a research design and methods section to experimentally and/or theoretically investigate the aims; and a full set of appropriate literature citations. The Research Plan could be based on and/or include current funded or already applied for research projects

Incomplete applications with regard to the above-mentioned requirements will not be assessed.
