Job description

Our society increasingly depends on the digital world, making cybersecurity critical for ensuring the safety and resilience of IT systems and services.

In this area, the Semantics, Cybersecurity and Services (SCS) group of the University of Twente is looking for an Assistant Professor to join the cybersecurity team. Our research focuses on three key areas: Systems Security, Data Security, and AI Security (encompassing both Security of AI and AI-driven security).

We are seeking a dynamic and ambitious researcher to develop an independent research line within one or more of these domains. The ideal candidate is passionate about cutting-edge cybersecurity research and eager to contribute to a vibrant academic environment that values collaboration, creativity, and excellence.

Your responsibilities:

  • Conducting high-impact research and lead innovative research initiatives;
  • Securing external research funding and contribute to grant proposals;
  • Supervising PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers;
  • Contributing to the development and coordination of our educational programs by teaching 2–3 courses aligned with your expertise;
  • Supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis projects.

Your profile

  • You have a strong interest and have shown the ability to collaborate in an academic, multidisciplinary environment;
  • You have a PhD degree in Computer Science or a related discipline;
  • You have demonstrated the ability to perform top-notch research in the cybersecurity domain and related fields researched in the SCS group;
  • You have shown experience in acquiring external funding or are prepared to expand your skills in this respect;
  • You have good communication skills and are a team player;
  • You are fluent in English;
  • You have a University Teaching Qualification (Dutch: BKO) or equivalent or you are willing to acquire one within three years.

Our offer

  • We offer a position with an initial contract of one year. After a positive evaluation, the contract can be converted into a permanent contract.
  • You will be appointed within a very stimulating scientific environment. The university offers a dynamic ecosystem with enthusiastic colleagues.
  • Your salary and associated conditions are in accordance with the collective labour agreement for Dutch universities (CAO-NU);
  • The position is at Assistant Professor level, with a monthly salary ranging from € 4.537,-- (scale 11) to € 7056,-- (scale 12) gross depending on qualifications;
  • Excellent benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, a year-end bonus of 8.3% and a solid pension scheme;
  • The flexibility to work (partially) from home;
  • Free access to sports facilities on campus
  • A minimum of 232 leave hours in case of full-time employment based on a formal workweek of 38 hours. A full-time employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours on an annual basis.
  • Excellent support and facilities for professional and personal development.
  • We are also a family-friendly institution that offers parental leave (both paid and unpaid) and career support for partners.
  • We appreciate the diversity of profiles, cultures, and backgrounds, and promote an inclusive working culture.

About the department

Digitalization brings many new opportunities for businesses and governments by fostering the development of innovative online services. However, this development also brings new challenges, notably in terms of intelligence, interoperability, security and privacy. The mission of the SCS group is to realize the vision of meaningful computing within trusted digital environments by advancing the forefront of semantic modeling, enhancing cybersecurity, and innovating service design.

SCS is part of the Twente University Centre for Cybersecurity Research (TUCCR), a public-private partnership where experts, professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, and students from industry and knowledge partners collaborate to deliver talents, innovations, and know-how in the domain of cybersecurity. The mission of TUCCR is to strengthen the security and digital sovereignty of our society by performing top-level research on real-world data, systems, and network security challenges. To achieve significant societal impact, TUCCR combines technical, socio-economic, and ethical know-how and is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, ranging from security labs, testbeds, and data lakes.

TUCCR researchers play a leading role in their field, regularly publishing at top security conferences such as USENIX Security, IEEE S&P, and NDSS. In addition, TUCCR researchers are also active in a number of leading national and international research projects, and their work regularly finds its way into policy documents, such as the National Risk Assessment.
