At European level, BRGM has been involved for many years in research programmes, support to public policy development and international cooperation, thereby forging many enduring partnerships.

BRGM is active at the European level, with sustained involvement in European research programmes and support to public policy development and international cooperation. The BRGM’s involvement in Europe includes:

  • Interfacing between governments, government departments, industries, local and regional authorities and research;
  • Providing decision support by delivering data, knowledge and expert tools to address complex systems at different scales;
  • Acting as a key networking operator at the national, European and international levels to initiate and build up research and development programmes and upgrade decision-support tools.

Topic areas covering all geosciences fields

BRGM’s activities at European level involve all of its topic areas: geology, mineral resources, geothermal energy, geological storage of CO2, water, post-mining, risks, polluted soils and waste, metrology, information systems and interoperability.

It monitors new regulatory, scientific and technical developments in these fields to guarantee the responsiveness of its proposals and activities.

Close involvement in the Framework Programme for Research and Development (FPRD)

BRGM has been involved for many years in the European Union's Framework Programme for Research and Development (FPRD). In the last 15 years, it has contributed about a hundred projects under the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th FPRD.

BRGM's contributions to these programmes tripled from 2000 to 2010. It is among the 20 leading French contributors to the 7th FPRD, participating in 45 projects - including 9 as project coordinator – supported by over 14 .5 million euros in subsidies.

Support to EU public policy development

BRGM also contributes to the development of European public policies. It interfaces between the public authorities, public and private-sector leaders and research. It is involved in projects funded by the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) or by its territorial cooperation component through INTERREG.

International cooperation activities

BRGM contributes through different projects to EU policy for international cooperation, which supports developing and emerging countries under major European policies, especially on the environment and efficient resource use (including energy).

Numerous European collaborative programmes and partnerships

All of these activities have enabled the BRGM to forge partnerships with many European players. As the French national geological survey, the BRGM contributes to the organisation of Europe's geological sphere. It is a founder member of EuroGeoSurveys, the Association of European geological surveys.

BRGM is also involved in a various interest groups and research networks in its areas of activity, such as CLORA, CEEP Europe, CO2GEONET, the European Network for Research in Geo-Energy (ENeRG) and the Common Forum on Contaminated Land in Europe.
