SHAPE THE FUTURE OF COMPLEX ENERGY-DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEMS. This doctoral position at Chalmers University of Technology offers a unique opportunity to conduct advanced research on the modeling, simulation, and integration of complex energy-digital systems in the context of smart ports. As part of the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network Ports as Energy Transition Hubs (POTENT), the position includes academic and industry secondments (DTU Compute and Danfoss Power Electronics), and access to a dynamic European research network. The fellowship offers exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary training, collaboration, and career development—preparing you to lead in the transition to resilient, decarbonized port and energy systems.

Information about the division and the department The candidate will be located at the division of Physical Resource Theory, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. We conduct systems-level research to address major environmental challenges using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The division includes expertise from engineering, natural, and social sciences and offers a collaborative and multidisciplinary academic environment.

Major responsibilities The Ports as Energy Transition Hubs (POTENT) Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network is a prestigious and interdisciplinary research initiative exploring how ports can serve as catalysts for Europe's clean energy transition. Funded under Horizon Europe and led by Copenhagen Business School, the network comprises 15 doctoral positions hosted across leading academic institutions and industrial partners with research spanning energy infrastructure, maritime systems, data science, and digital engineering.

You will contribute to research advancing the integration of digital and energy systems for smart port infrastructure. Key tasks include:

  • Developing a multi-layer modeling architecture using AADL and Modelica/FMI.
  • Designing resilience metrics and assessment methods for cyber-physical energy systems.
  • Conducting system simulations and validating results with academic and industrial partners.
  • Disseminating tools and results through open science platforms.

Expected outputs include both theoretical frameworks and practical tools for smart port analysis, resilience evaluation, and system integration.

Qualifications The candidate must be in compliance with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie mobility rule (not having resided in the country of the host institution for more than 12 months in the last 36 months).

Mandatory:

  • Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Control, Optimization, or related field.
  • Strong background in modeling and simulation of complex systems.
  • Proficiency in digitalization tools, simulation environments, and academic writing.
  • Fluent in English.

Meritorious:

  • Background in Computer Science.
  • Knowledge of energy systems, co-simulation, SoS integration, resilience analysis.
  • Experience working with industry or interdisciplinary teams.

Contract terms
