Are you interested in advanced power electronics and the future of electrified off-road vehicles? Join our team and contribute to the development of innovative control architectures and power electronics technologies in a collaborative and dynamic research environment.

About us

We at the Division of Electric Power Engineering conducts research within a broad range of topics in electric power technology. Our purpose is to develop interdisciplinary research areas within the university as well as with external partners. Our research is based on a solid theoretical basis and extensive experimental verification in our laboratories. Research activities at the division are organized in two research units: (1) Electrical Machines and Power Electronics, and (2) Power Grid and Components.

In research unit Electrical Machines and Power Electronics, we are about 25 persons, of which two third are PhD students. Our research directions include: (1) electrical machines; (2) traction inverters; (3) high frequency power electronics and charging; (4) electric drive systems, and (5) battery energy storage.

About the research project

The research project is funded by Swedish government and our industrial partner. The target of the research project is to develop an innovative embedded structure for a centerized control of all on-board power electronics devices. The integration of power electronics enables optimization of the system design and harmonization of different functionalities for reliable and cost-effective energy conversion onboard off-road vehicles. Your focus will be on design and verification of the control structure and software achitecture, as well as dimensioning the PE hardware for a vehicle platform. You will also investigate the required capability of the controller to meet multiple functionalities such as traction, charging, and voltage conversion. The proposed solutions should be verified by real-time simulation, HIL, and partly experiments of the prototype.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • Master's degree with 120 credits in electrical engineering with power electronics and control as major direction.
  • Comprehensive knowledge on hardware and control of traction inverters/motors, DC/DC converters, and on-board chargers.
  • Practical experiences on prototyping and experimental tests of power electronics and control systems.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • Knowledge on embedded system, DSP, and multicore processor.
  • Spirit and personal skill for collaboration with colleagues and industrial experts.
  • Documented academic publications.

What you will do

  • Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of electrical engineering.
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.
  • As teaching assistant on Chalmers' undergraduate/postgratuate level corresponding to maximum 20 percent of working time.
  • Our expectation on your contributions to the research topic and the project team is high. In return you will receive excellent support from other team members and learn into your role fast. Of course, you should write and publish high quality academic papers based on your findings and research results.

Contract terms

  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
  • The position is started with a fixed-term appointment of four years, with a later extension for maximum one more year based on teaching tasks.
  • A starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month.
  • Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
